Motive is useful for investigators. The general public doesn't need to know. What are they going to do with the information other than form opinions about that group?

This is what I believe. I believe it is pointless for the general public to know. There is nothing we can do with the information. Is there? It's not about censoring anything or not being transparent. It's just not important for the general public to know. If it is really that important that you just NEED to know then you should be able to get that information through a FOIA request. But tell me, how does it help you to know that shooter was a trans person.

This is what I believe. I believe it is pointless for the general public to know. There is nothing we can do with the information. Is there? It's not about censoring anything or not being transparent. It's just not important for the general public to know. If it is really that important that you just NEED to know then you should be able to get that information through a FOIA request. But tell me, how does it help you to know that shooter was a trans person.

The last thing I would think anybody would want is a secretive gov't deciding which facts are the ones we need to know and which aren't.

I will ask you again though... how does knowing the shooters sexual orientation help you? Or the color of the persons skin or the persons race? How does any of that help you understand the crime in any way?

See if you can tell me why these people do these crimes:

White guy plows his SUV through a crowd of women. Motive?

Black guy plows his SUV through a crowd of women. Motive?

Chinese guy plows his SUV through a crowd of women. Motive?

You literally said if someone wants the info, they would have to get it through an FOIA.
That would mean the info is kept under lock and key by the gov't, to be released only when someone requests the info, even though the information should be public in the first place (5 U.S.C. § 552).

Maybe you did it unwittingly, but asking why anyone should see info without an FOIA is an express statement that you think the government should control the information shared by the media and by the people.
Unless the information is classified in some way or would violate a person's rights by public dissemination, there is no reason for our government to keep it under lock and key.

This is America, and that is one of the freedoms we get to have, whether people like it or not.
