Will gains cause a speaker to die?

Could putting the gains all the way up cause a sub to stop working even if the amp is rated less than the rms of the sub? I ask cause Im trying to figure out why my new sub totally blew out when my amp was only pushing 400watts rms and the rms of the sub was 600watts. I noticed the gain was turned up all the way by mistake when i was messing around with it before i went on vacation. I come back and 10 minutes into my ride the speaker stopped working. I go to the trunk and push in on a cone with my hand and it starts pumping like a tone test type thing, remove my hand and no sound again.

but I heard no distortion at all. Could it cause the sub to pop? Im just trying to figure out why it died I mean the amp doesnt push the rms of the sub so I need to know if its worth trying to run the replacement sub with that amp and readjust the gain or better off not risking it.

you clipped the pise out of the speaker. the gain is used to match the input level from the headunit. more speakers blow due to clipping then by simply being overpowered. get your speaker fixed and read the gain setting tutorial in the amp forum.

Distortion on a sub=Bad...
errr...not necessarily.

If you set the gains high enough that the amp was clipping, you'd create a square wave on the output instead of a nice sine wave...the result being you could send nearly double the power continously to the driver. If the amp was clipping, you could have definitely risked damage to the driver. What's the voltage you're getting on the amp's output?

Yep, Yep, as allways that is correct....Oh and...

But you have to admit, they picked a startlingly accurate name, don't you think? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/rolleyes.gif.c1fef805e9d1464d377451cd5bc18bfb.gif//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

I just wanted to make my point across, considering that this question has been answered now four times within two weeks, and the same myths keep getting dragged back from the dead. You can't clip speakers, distortion isn't necessarily bad, and I like cheese.

You can't clip a speaker, you clip the amplifier

whatever, don't get technical with me or i'll kick ya in the nuts. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/up2something.gif.dd110ecf3ae4b76050d87598f2f8de7c.gif anyways thanks for correcting my mistake. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif
