well about a year or so ago i got this wierd problem with my computer at home and i am just now trying to fix it. the problem is it won't go on the internet. I have dial-up (i know) it will connect and you will see the 2 computers come up in the task bar but it won't download the page. The whole problem arised one day when i was on one of those free **** thumbnail sites. we all know how those put a bunch of files on your computer (this was pre-spam blocker days) one day when i clicked on a thumbnail pic it would come up in its own window so i started to go to uninstall and uninstalled all those programs to see if that would fix it and thats when the problem came up. some other symptoms are norton anti virus (i hadn't updated it in a long time before the problem arose) would have a pop up window saying "unable to connect, check tcip/ip protocal or something like that, another window would pop up saying "explorer has created an error in unknown, please click to restart explorer" and control alt delete doesn't work anymore. some info on my system is Windows me, IE 5.0/5.5 neoplanet, windows media player 7.5 i did use kazaa and it has a celeron 500 or so mhz processor. anyone remember hearing about a virus like this? and what should i do, just buy new anti virus software since the software out now should cover this virus since it happened like 2 years ago, take it to a computer repair shop (probally format the harddrive and start from scratch since i don't have anything really important on it anyway) or since is so old and slow just buy/build one myself. and if do buy one MAC or windows? I never got to use a computer with windows xp that much since the ones in my public libary (the one i'm on now) uses windows nt. I don't really care for computer gaming that much so that isn't a issue.

if you know how to build them, then just format the harddrive and reinstall windows.

running a celeron though, i'd say buy something new just for the sake up upgrading, if you have the money. steer clear of those processors.

if you buy a new one...go Apple!

Its a microsoft product, theres your problem....But then i don't like apples either...soo....GO LINUX....

*Edit* no i don't have any usefull information...but I do agree, just reformat the thing...

you need to rebuild the TCP/IP driver, uninstall the TCP/IP via networking... reboot and run virus/ad scans... then rebuild TCP/IP driver... should work just fine... //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

P.S. Get windows 2k or xp... much much more stable...

hahahahaha. yea dude, totally reroute the proxy and set the coordinates.

but yea, def go win2k. xp's not bad, but if you get it, go pro.

linux is cool to say that you run linux...but really...how much can the average user do with linux?

^^ AGREED... your best best would be if you have the original disks, do a clean install until you can buy a new comp or a new OS... sounds like the virus attacked your networking components and without being in front of it, it is hard to fix... make sure your computer is obtaining an IP... if so, try resetting your homepage to a different site and try another site... sometimes the DHCP server doesn't recognize certain URLs.. (due to virus coding and such) If not, get the model # of your NIC, and reinstall the network drivers... good luck //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

atleast you can turn your computer off and on...if we lose power or someone turns the computer off or just shuts off by itself...Windows XP fails to load...so only method Ive found to fix that is leaving it unplugged from wall for about a day then it *might* load...

So you dont like microsoft (windows?), and you dont like apple (hardware?) so you tell him to buy linux (software)? What are you talking about? A celeron isnt a "Windows" product, its an OS...he can install Linux on it if he wants.

Id say go with the reformat into a fresh install with either Norton or PC-Cillin. Def. SP2 with Windows XP.

the problem with this pc is that it was a "economy" model and so much stuff was integrated that the only thing that can be saved is the monitor, cd burner, floppy, keyboard, mouse, soundcard and modem and i would want to get a flat screen and dsl since its now available in my area. exactly how would i go about formating the harddrive since i can't just right click on the harddrive and go to format. I have the installation cd for ME and i have tried to reinstall windows without reformatting and that didn't work. I'm going to try to get the comp in working order for now and probally buy a used G4 or something. and another thing is that since this happened like 2 years ago i cancelled my account a long time ago. I think i'll try to format and reinstall windows and buy antivirus for now

Well, I can pretty much do everything I did on Windows with the exception of running 3DS Max. My copy of Fedora Core 3 has better hardware support than Windows XP =). I also never have problems like these, so there's that peace of mind you don't get with Windows.

the dhcp server probably doesnt recognize certain URLS because thats not the job of a dhcp server, the DHCP assigns ip addresses/hostnames. I think ur thinking of a nameserver.

but anywho id go for a fresh reformat. If uve been having this problem for a year or whatever, id def say go and buy a newer up to date OS and reinstall.

Also, its very possible to do everything u can on windows, on linux //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif
