As I understand it, this clinic would allow me to administer an illegally obtained intravenous drug legally. On one hand, I see how this would prevent the spread of AIDS and accidental overdose. On the other hand, I see a danger in pushing occasional or potential users into possible full-blown addictions, with the fear of prosecution or overdose removed.
Hence most of the reason I can't formulate an opinion. It needs to run its course a bit to see if the pros outweigh the cons.
I can understand the debate in it. It's like preaching abstinence to kids(who won't listen) or teaching them how to use condoms correctly. I just don't really know which side of the fence to be on.

Obviously, the need for putting resources into steps and policies to curb addiction and illegal immigration in the first place will be key. If successful, there would be little need for controversial programs such as these (drivers license/shooting gallery) to be implemented in the first place.

Is it better to fix holes in a leaky dam, or rebuild it from the ground up?

teen pregnancy rates are down significantly.

Also, all the shooting gallery programs i have read about started as trial programs and were extended because they were successful.

You are paying for it one way or another.
You pay for it when they overdose and require medical care, get HIV/hepatitis and require medical care, or when a kid gets stuck with a dirty needle in the park and requires medical care.
not to mentioned the amount of drug addicts that are deemed "disabled" and collect a disability check every month to buy their drugs......my cousin was one of them...never worked a day in his life but always had money in his pocket to buy crack...

uh, they have put billions of dollars into the war on drugs and have nothing to show for it except for high incarceration rates and the add cost associated with imprisoning large numbers of people.

Some people like to get intoxicated and no amount of spending is going to change that.

Would it be possible to reduce the rates significantly if better programs were put in place?

here in san francisco there is alot of treatment centers, the most per capita in the nation i believe, however it doesn't help much, homelessness goes up almost every year despite the citys continued efforts to help. they have opened two knew shelters in the last 3 years. i don't think it will help. personally i am trying to raise a daughter here so i don't like the idea, it's like saying it's okay, so i like the incinerator idea. ha! also it doesn't help much when mayor gavin newsom is an admitted addict/alcoholic and publicly seeks treatment at delancy street rehab center! what a city!

I have a great idea.
Let's open up illegal drug stores so that people can buy drugs in a safe, protected environment. That way, people won't die in drug deals gone bad! Brilliant!
thats sorta what mexico did right? isnt it legal to carry and do drugs as long as you have a certain amount on you....says it cuts down on robberies and what not....

Perhaps, but you are essentially advocating against trying new ways attempting to address current program inadequacy.

Maybe we should think outside the box.

Hey, lets let the federal government start producing all these drugs too. That way we know they are the real deal and we can run druglords out of business.
