Hey, I Try.
Only two arguements i can see are that they take smaller boxes and that whole debated Smaller subs=more controlled bass kind of thing.

i've been thinking about using a shallowmount tuned high for up front midbass reinforcement myself, just need to know what shallowmount hits the upper notes more than anything below 50hz.I just got the Pioneer HVT powered under-seat sub that just came out not long ago. The design is weird, instead of the voice coils/magnets..etc behind a cone, they are on either side of 2 flat pistons.Anyway, that thing flat out pounds pretty good. Enough to make my rear view mirror shake. It's very punchy compared to typical subs and cleaner sounding than I originally expected. I just got it so I could increase the up front mid-bass and it worked out very well so now my W6 sub is completely de-localized and all the bass sounds like its coming from my front speakers. It beats trying to add more front components or use bass boosts.
So there's all sorts of uses for small subs besides just space. Also, with small subs you can arrange or separate them inside your car for however you need to maximize the space you do have.
