Why is it most local audio places carry low end?

So I asked my audio shop guy why he doesn't carry some of the better stuff and he said nobody spends for it. It started with me suggesting he should carry a couple high end lines since the other shops carry low stuff and he would be the only one around with better stuff (other than Tweeter). His lines:

Amps- Kenwood, Directed, Crossfire

Subs- Kicker, Memphis

Head Units- Kenwood

Kenwood is good stuff especially head units but I tried talking him into carrying Focal, CDT, Diamond. He doesn't even carry JL which most places do. Just kind of floors me that people buy up all the low end stuff at retail prices where I don't care for most of it and bought most everything here or E-Bay. most people either dont know of those brands & thier potential because thier not main stream named like JL & rockford, or the pricing on them is to high most places unless they have a HUGE volume cannot afforrd to keep them onhand and so forth.

Some places it is a waste, stuff will sit on shelfs for a long *** time and rarely have to type of customer willing to spend the cash on it.

I think it depends on the location of the shop as well. But alot of shops carry lower end stuff because its more affordable. And as far as location goes. If they are located in a good area (with high spenders) they could carry higher end stuff and make a good profit

Well I guess that explains it then.

I always feel bad going in to his shop for installs but never buy anything of his. He tried to make me a deal on a Directed 4-channel but the retail price he was asking was more than I paid for the QAA 4-channel I got off E-Bay and it had about 2X the power. I just can't bring myself to buying a product that doesn't sound or do the job for me.

because people see 1000 watt amp for $200 and they see a quality1000 watt amp and its $800.

not realizing that the cheap amp probably only puts out 300 watts and of not clear power at that.

same with speakers and other stuff

then when you come around with your high end gear and let them listen to it they are like wow, then they realized they just spent money stupidly

so the stores sell what they can sell and make money on.

they can sell 10 cheap amps and make good money or sell just a few high end amps and make a little, moving product makes money plain and simple

Because people want bass for the cheapest price, so shops cater to those people because it sells. It's their bread and butter.

He doesn't even carry JL which most places do.

JL Audio is a territorial company which means if one shop carries it in that area, no other shop near them can have it. Most companies are like that.

What would be involved in me setting up my own accounts with some of these places? Maybe I can fill that need on the side for those in this area that can't get any of the stuff we see here.

First check out the shops to see what they sell to make sure you're not in their territory, then contact the companies you're interested in - expect to pay a pretty penny for stock too!

Alot of people dont buy online (ie pays retail). They only know the compaies that have really well marketed names (MTX, JL, Kenwood, Rockford, etc.) so products are easier to sell.

you cant just get a highend brand, theres a lot more involved with being a dealer with JL, Focal. etc, also depends on the rep for that brand. etc. its not the fact the people wont buy it. hes not telling you the whole story.. from what i have experienced.

Not completly true, U can carry just all high end brands, but u have to make areally good name for urself. A local shop by my house doesnt carry anything below Arc. They have Arc, Morel, DLS, Helix, Brax, RE, ID, Tru Tech, and some other ones I cant think of off the top of my head. They have a really good rep of doing extremely well installs, just u get what u pay for, so they cost alot. But Its a great shop and they carry only high end and they do very well. But than again I live in So Cal, so more people with money.

That is why I shut down my shop. I could not sell crap, but that is what people can afford. Not looking down on anyone, it is just what they want,BOOM! Not quality. When your in H.S. and not making any money and that is what is available, that is what you get. They think it is really loud and all thier friends have it. I carried stuff I liked and Arc Audio,Treo,Zapco,etc. didn't sell. $200,000.00 dollar 8 month mistake!
