i purchased some image dynamics speakers less than 4 months ago. i had them professionally installed. i am very surprised that the speakers are no longer working.

i bought the xs65 component set and the ctx65cs coaxials. the only speakers still working are the door speakers from the component set, everything else is dead.

i went back to the installation shop when they stopped working and had them check out the speakers. they said the speakers were toast and they did not find anything wrong with the install or settings.

these speakers were not distorting, they were getting around 80 watts, and they were crossed over at good levels. they did sound nice, even at loud volumes, but why are they no longer working after only just buying them?

i am afraid to buy anything else image dynamics now. any recommendations? should i be looking at hertz?

i do need something that can play very loud and i would prefer a softer tweeter. the vehicle is a 2006 4runner.

If you blew them up it's likely that one of these is not a true statement. If they lasted 4 months they weren't defective out of the box.

hispls

i totally agree with you. i would have to guess they couldn't handle the power.

i have the soundqubed 4 channel amp. 90x4.

i like my music VERY loud, but not at all distorted.

what should i get now??

start by researching gain and understand the main reasons why speakers blow and you'll be on the right track.

a lot of people new to amplifiers and signal ratios don't understand what happens when you drive equipment too hard and burn up their equipment due to excess heat.

did you touch any of the settings on your amp after the install? go a few notches too high on the volume? turn on the loud setting on your headunit or adjust the EQ to boost any frequencies into hard clipping?

How did the shop set the gain on your amplifiers? these are all questions you need to ask yourself when trying to figure this out. there's a multitude of reasons that cause a speaker to fail due to heat, it's all about determining which reason fits your circumstances and it's really hard for us to figure that out when we're not the one who sits in front of the volume/eq/boost/gain knob

You cant hear clipping in the signal through the speakers most of the times. You most likely clipped your speakers to death without even knowing it. Speakers can handle the power fine, just not when its clipped. Clean music vs dirty music could also be a culprit. Thats not a very loud speaker set to begin with either.

i had the amp close to max gain so i was probably clipping them.

soundqubed amp 90x4.

it sounded soo good that i thought it was ok.

i have never experienced blown/dead speakers without any noticeable distortion.

does that mean i should be considering replacement speakers that are more efficient so i can keep the levels down?

i really do not want to upgrade my amp.

thank you for the help.

The ID XS are actually a pretty sensitive set @92db as it is. The only way to get significantly more sensitivity than that is to start using pro audio gear. I would suggest bridging your amp to the fronts and setting the gains correctly (gain is not a volume knob) There is a ton of useful threads around about setting gains correctly. By bridging the amp you should be able to get more volume and maintain a clean signal. Those comps will handle that power no problems if gains are set right and they are getting a clean signal. You can just power the rear off of the factory HU or get rid of them altogether. Rear fill is often not needed.

That's why they blew.

Now you need speakers that can handle 300 rms lol

You must have strong ears to handle that kind of power.

umwdawg

thanks for the idea. i may do just that very thing.

i probably should have insisted on the installer configuring my amp at 2 ohms or 4 ohms bridged to give me more headroom to begin with.

can anyone recommend something that would sound as good or better than the Image Dynamics in the same price range?

200w RMS per speaker is pretty common anymore, ppi 900.4s are so cheap. The power is awesome, I have two amps for my mids and highs lol I couldn't go back to less power it sounds so measly
