If you want to use the open heart thing...

The alternator is the heart pumping the blood, the battery is the bone marrow making the blood, the wire is the stitches/blood vessles to close it all up and conduct the blood, and the capacitor is bandge to ensure the heart takes well and the wound heals correctly. The cap can be a vital part of a system for it to work it's best.

if the condom pops you are stuck with an 18 year headache where if a fuse pops, at most you loose some equipment and a car

Think of it like this: say you're wanting to go white water rafting. The water itself is the amperage, and the speed or ferocity that it's going at is the voltage. Say that you need more speed to safely clear a waterfall. You need more water flow for that, but if you take too much, you're going to have the water level go down. Imagine a lake or resovoir as your alternator that is feeding the river (the amperage). When you need that extra flow, your water level goes down, which is a drop in amperage, AKA your alternator cannot keep up. This is probably the most common side effect of car audio. Now, what you need to do is to create more amperage, so you make a larger lake (larger alt), and more voltage so that the lake can keep feeding your rapids at the rate that you need it (another or better battery). Now, here's where the capacitor comes in. Imagine another small back water pool dammed up on the side of the river, but it's being fed by the water in the river itself. When you need those rapids fast, you can undam the pool so that you don't deplete the water level. Now, in theory that's great, but where'd the water come from? It came from the river itself which essentially renders the pool useless since you're feeding something else that is going to fix your problem, but actually doesn't do anything (and can potentially be worse)

Because the local audio shop doesnt know how to make a demo board and everything metal is mysteriously charged with 120v AC....and it shocked the shit out of me when I brisked the basket of an Xplod.
