I have a 16v batcap in the rear and a 12v under the hood. Ran by an ea alty, external regulator and a like step down device.

The rear battery is charging at 17.1-18.5 volts at idle and the front battery is at 12.4 at idle.... why? When at 1500rpm the back is at 19.1 and the front at 13.4

the alternator probably doesnt turn on until 1500RPM.

Or the regulator could be bad and allows voltage to go up higher the rpm. Rev the engine higher than 1500 rpm and if it quits going up then its just the alt doesnt turn on until then.

then the alt just turns on at a higher rpm than your idle.

This is a common thing with aftermarket HO alts, mainly because all you do is manipulate the power curve of the alt. There is only so much copper you can put inside of a alt case, and only so much output you can have. By manipulating the power curve you can have a higher idle amperage or a higher amperage at higher rpm. Nothing wrong there

Why would it ruin it, your charging a 12v batt at 12.4 v... sure it isnt the 14.4 its used to but it is at idle, and when you drive it will charge it higher. I personally wouldnt worry about it

me neither but WHY does it do it. what is it is it the step down since the alternator is ext regulated?

The step down is stepping it down to far, I'm not sure of how his step down works, if it is adjustable, which I doubt it is because step downs are just a series of fixed components that lower the voltage. Not much you can do, besides contact the people you got the alt from...
