Which Would Be The Best Option?

Okay guys... Heres the deal...

I am currently running (well I am going to be running - its not installed yet) one 12" Kicker CompVR in a 1.25 cubic inch pre-fab sealed box. Now I always hear everyone saying that no matter whether you have trash subs or compete super subs, it all depends on install. So my question to you is:

If I were to get my hands on a good sub, such as a 15" Avalanche or 15" Lethal Injection, what would you recommend me to do:

  1. Sell the new sub and buy a complete custom, ported box made to the exact specifications of a 12" Kicker CompVR from http://www.caraudiobox.com for about $200 shipped
  2. Sell the new sub and buy another Kicker CVR and throw both into a prefab ported box
  3. Sell the Kicker CVR and its current box and throw the new sub into a prefab ported box

Obviously, I am not going to get my hands on a super sub out of nowhere. But if I were to, what would you suggest (This will help me with my plans for the future). If it were to happen, these would basically be my only options when taking money into account...

I guess im really trying to find out if its more worth it to pay for the perfect box and a entry level sub, or a high level sub with a entry level box....

1.) Try CVR in current box.

2.) Build yourself (don't waste $200 on a box, and yes it is a waste) a vented enclosure built to Kicker specs. Box building is not hard. If you have a friend, some wood, a table saw, and some screws, you can do it.

3.) If you're still not satisfied with the CVR in the vented enclosure, start considering a new setup.

Blah.....bad option because $200 for a ported box is WAY too much money IMHO.

Bad option because #3 is better //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/tongue.gif.6130eb82179565f6db8d26d6001dcd24.gif

Nothing wrong with the CVR's....but compared to an 15" Ava, the Ava is simply a better sub. Though, neither of those options are really stellar since you'd be using a prefab ported box (far less than ideal). Find a friend who is good with wood, spend the $10 and have someone on here design a box for ya, then spend the $50 (max) on materials and have someone help ya build it.

$200 for a ported box //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif If building yourself is 100% outta the question, I'd check out prices at local dealers well before I paid that much........

I was told that box building isn't easy and that a lot of work goes into it...

I talked to the guy from http://www.thecaraudiobox.com and he explained that the perfect box is more important than the perfect sub and that $200 for the box I would be getting would be well worth it and blah blah blah...

but now you are all saying the opposite....

So how hard is it really to build a box?

(if the guy from thecaraudiobox is a member of this site, maybe he can chime in what im missing)

I only paid like $50 for my ported "super bass box", and the thing was pretty descent. DIY is the best bet cause you can assure that its right..... unless your a retard

There's nothing to building a box. If you can work a measuring tape and a saw, you can do it. You can search around for specs that break down the dimensions of each piece and how it fits together so you can figure out what you're doing. I built my sealed enclosure in a couple of hours. I think the longest part of the process was letting the glue and sealer dry. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

Now if you want to get fancy and bondo your screw holes, smooth everything out, paint/carpet, ect. then yes, it gets a little harder. But for your basic enclosure, there really isn't much to it. Everything is already mapped out for you and all that's left to do is the physical piecing together.

The design is the hardest to get right. Box building is easy....cut the wood to the correct dimensions, glue it, screw it and seal it with caulk. You can even do all the little "extra" stuff like PVC in the corners if you like. But, if you can work with wood at all (or know someone who can), box building isn't a problem.

One word: salesmanship

He's trying to get you to pay $200 for a box.....why wouldn't he say it's the most important thing //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crazy.gif.c13912c32de98515d3142759a824dae7.gif The design is the hard part (and a good design w/ building plans can be had on here for $10 from very knowledgeable members like Jmac). Building it is cake if you can work with wood (or know someone who can).

I guess he was just being a "salesman", but I just expected a more honest response or soemthing...

I gotta pay for a design //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif lol

Yeah....it takes time and knowledge/experience to produce a good box design. However; weigh the prices:

1) Excellent box design w/ plans ($10) + Building materials ($50) = $60 for excellent box

2) Box from TCAB = $200

Given you (or someone you know) have adequate woodworking skills, you can either have an excellent box for $60 (maximum) or an excellent box for $200. Which would you rather have //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif
