Which setup could potentially yield a higher output?

Just here...
I just finished up installing my 3 type r's with a jl 500/1 on each last night and it just doesn't seem to yield the output that i know it can (from messing with one of my r's in different boxes). I know that my box is on the small side because it's only 1.8 Ft^3, but it's about all the room I can get without doing a all fiberglass box to conform to the t-top holders. I'm wanting to know which one of these two you think would have a higher output and why.

3 12" Type R's

3 JL 500/1's

1.8 Ft^3 Box (0.6 Ft^3 per sub)

or

2 12" Type R's

4 JL 500/1s (~1000 watts per sub)

1.8 Ft^3 Box (0.9 Ft^3 per sub)

Thanks a lot guys.

o I see now I would do the 2 12's
Why do you say that?

on 1.8ft^3 you should do one 12
I've tried one 12 in the box with 850 watts in it wasn't enough //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif will an extra 150 watts really make a difference?

I'm thinking that i'm going to have to come up with a different box design. what would be a good about of air space for

3 r's on 500 each or 2 r's on 1000 each?
