Hello!
Well, I've got a little 1987 Chevy Sprint with a giant 3 cylinder 1.0 liter motor and a brand new 55 amp alternator. It was fine when I was running one amp and one sub...but now I've gone crazy and am up to three amps (two Sony XM-1502-SX running at 4 ohm for about 300 each and each has a 40 amp fuse, and one kenwood KAC-7201 that is running at about 300 watts and has two 30 amp fuses).
So...all in all it could hit 900 watts and 140 amps. I've also got a one farad cap before the distro in the hatchback.
Anyway, I am realizing that the weak link here is the tiny alternator. When I start listening at "power" levels, it doesn't take very long to really bring the battery down (I've tried two different batteries, just to check). In fact, I've stranded myself twice (thank goodness for a manual transmission). Is there a place to get a reasonably priced higher output alternator that will bolt in to replace my Advance Auto Parts Worldwide 14824 unit. I'm trying to keep it simple, but I'm not above some fabrication/engineering. I even thought about just adding another alternator...maybe a one wire unit. But I'm not sure where I would mount it, etc...
Anyway, here's hoping for some knowledge! Thanks so much!
John
