whats wrong with my computer?

you may have damaged the harddrive.

did it make a clicking sound when you turned it on?

That happened to my harddrive before, it most likely has a component knocked loose. This could be causing it to scrape against something and overheat.

I'd suggest making a fs thread for a like-new laptop that 'occasionally' freezes, nothing wrong with it though //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

or sell it to me mad cheap I need one.

how hard is it to replace a hard drive?
its pretty easy to replace most laptop parts. in my old inspiron the harddrive popped right out the side when you removed 2 screws. check your owners manual, itll show you where all the parts are located.

It is very easy to replace the hard drive in that laptop it will slip out, you will need a 2.5 inch sata harddrive to replace it with. Also if you dropped it it might have knocked the hard drive loose but if this is the case you could not start windows at all, you would only be able to get to the motherboards bios.

Also if you replace the hard drive you will need a copy of windows on a disk because the partitioned space holding your backup copy of windows would be on your old drive and useless.

So I ordered a new hard drive, I found my restore discs, 1 says it has my utilities and my drives, the other says it has my os (vista). Do I need to install both of them? Anything I need to know before I install it tomorrow?

Start with the OS CD then install the utilities. You cant install those on a computer without an OS. Let me know if you need some real help. Unfortunately, this is what I do for a living. Yes, I am that "IT guy"
