What's wrong with have 10 inch subs?

But most people now want total spl no matter what they say. At least younger guys. Sure if it sounds good its ok but as long as it is loud.
Seems to most people these days so long as its loud, it sounds 'good'. And most of the rest only consider distortion when contemplating "SQ". Ask a car audio guy how well he thinks his system blends... chances are he wont even understand what you are talking about. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crazy.gif.c13912c32de98515d3142759a824dae7.gif

the reason why i usually don't buy 10's is because most of the time, the 12 is like $10 more than the 10...

examples: 13kv2 is $10 more than 11kv2, AQ HD12 is like $20 more than HD10 when they are already $300 something, type r 12 is like $8 more than type r 10 on ebay...

sure you loose space with the bigger encloser for the 12's but like most guys have said, the 12 will give ya a better bang for the buck same model wise...

I like 10s and 8s for the simple reason that I can get 4 8s in my trunk and have more room left in my trunk than with the 1 12 that is there now. I previously had 6 10s in a box smaller than that of the 1 12 I have now.

My basic point is that smaller subs take up less room. Often a lot less. You can many times run multiple small subs that will equal the output of a single larger sub and do it in less space. Since all I want is to fill out the bottom end of my music and I don't want anyone outside to hear it, I really don't care about getting really loud. I just need loud enough to keep up with my front stage and overcome the exhaust note of my car (not an aftermarket coffee can muffler either). In my experience, 10s and smaller will give me the output I need in the space I am willing to allocate.

i completely agree with you except for one BIG thing...

like i mentioned, you spend $200 on a 12, (generally) will take about almost twice as much space as 2 10's...BUT, you'll be paying about $180 for 2 10's approximately...so you're paying almost DOUBLE to get a a little bit more output out of the 2 10's...

if i had the money i'd get the multiple 10's over the 12 anyday but theres always the issue of money...

if you're going for sq and want the install to look clean and uncluttered and don't need the HUGE output, i'll agree that going with smaller subs is a good idea...

Two Soundsplinter RL-i8's sound traveled further than my 12xxx. Install/vehicle...
have you ever gotten those two lil beasts measured?

daym, that great 8 challenge makes me wanna get two CMP8 or RLi8's and port those beasts!! //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crazy.gif.c13912c32de98515d3142759a824dae7.gif

That's assuming that you're using the same brand and model of sub. In my case the comparison is between an '04 XXX, which is on the higher end of the price spectrum and the Assassin 8 (x4). The Assassins are much cheaper and take up less space. Looking back I wish I had gotten the 10 XXX two years ago. I didn't need the extra output that the 12 could potentially provide and I would have saved a ton of space in my trunk and probably wouldn't be doing the rebuild that I'll be doing when I get home.

Also depending on your priorities and the goals of your system, spending more money to save a bunch of space might be totally worth it. If all you care about is getting loud and are willing to sacrifice a lot of space to do it, then you don't need to worry about small subs, but if you are building your system for you, and you actually use the car and need to conserve space and maybe retain your spare tire and the use of some of you trunk, the huge enclosure requirement of larger subs just eliminates them as an option.

Another thing to consider is the physical size of the larger drivers themselves, enclosure notwithstanding. In the first big system I ever had, there were 6 10's. I couldn't have fit 1 12 in the same space. The sub itself wouldhave been too tall for the room that was there. The size of the 12 was a huge design obstacle in my current system as well.

The only thing you lose going to a smaller driver is output. With the vehicle cabin gain factored in, most car subs in a sealed box can play down to sub-audible frequencies. The larger subs will simply be louder all other things being equal. If there was anything wrong with 10s or 8s no one would buy them so no one would make them. Fact is for a lot of people, smaller subs just make more sense.

well you have to compare the same brand and model of subs if you want to compare apples to apples...

even still, did the assassins produced the same output as the xxx? well, there you go...if those assassins costed less, used less space, sounded louder, i don't think anyone would ever consider buying XXX's again...

i guess we're all just going around in circles and the main point is that theres always a compromise...

my personal preference is to buy a 12, seal it cus it uses a smaller space, that gives me the option of porting it for a louder output later, or buying another 12 later and getting even more output...

you are right tho...ceteris paribus, you only use some output with the smaller driver...

personally i don't like loosing alot of space as well and for sq apps, i also say 8's or 10's is sufficient...
