the 2 main types of boxes are ported or sealed.. ported boxes are larger than sealed.. as far as which one to get.. it depends on what sub you're getting and what you want out of it as someone else said

the best kind of enclosure is one designed to fulfill your personal tastes, needs, and equipment.

sealed, ported (reflex), aperiodic, isobaric, bandpass, infinite baffle, open baffle, horn loading, cone loading, ABC and there are more types that are generally unspoken of.

the loudest are generally considered to be single reflex (ported) enclosures- and they are not incredibly difficult to design and build. but considering that there are bandpass enclosures that have done over 170 with music, i would say they are not typical enclosures.

It depends on the sub, the cab it's in, and about three billion (okay maybe not quite) other factors.

As far as general loudness goes...

Ported would be the easiest to design and make. But with bandpass designs you can fine tune everything you want. (I say everything... most everything, if you have an understanding of how they work)

But then again sealed enclosures in a clam shell design can get quite loud also. Some are designed like a 4th order bandpass though
