whats good/bad about 12" vs 15" subs...

i see your point about the 15" drowning out the

music... i havent run into a problem with my 12"

the way i have the gain set is about perfect so

the volumes both interior and subwoofer sync

nicely to my ears...

what i want to achieve with the RE SE's is not

much more aggressive than my W3's... it just

seems ive gone as far as i can with the JLs

without sacrificing SQ... im hoping the more

powerful SE's will allow me to set those gains

a bit higher... have a nice full sound... well...

more than i have now... without sacrificing

any SQ in the process...

i suppose the same thing could be done with

JL W6v2's... but thats way too much money...

well... its a lot of money and if the SQ isnt

even going to be as good as with the SE's

i suppose i can wait for RE to ship rather

than go down to the local audio store for

an inferior product...

But have you ever heard a 15" IDMax to compare it against //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif He didn't say it would have a "lacking" low frequency output.

IDMAX... mmmmmm... expensive...

lets not fight...

it sucks when the only car audio people you know are

your neighbors and their friends in high school who are

convinced that JL's are THE BEST SUBS MONEY CAN BUY...

and everyone has practically the same setup...

case in point... i have no idea what a 15" vs a 12" sound like

without asking on the internet...

sqeak is right, I am not condemning the sound of 12's or say they lack in the lower freqs. Im simply saying with more cone area, all other things being equal, it will increase output at the lower freqs. 12's have more low end than 10's, for example.

I know how IDMax 12's sound, I love them. Almost bought a pair myself. Im sure yours sound awesome prodigy.

And the internet can only give you so much information. You could learn more in an afternoon at a car soundoff about how subs sound than you could in a year sitting in a forum. Go to some local car shows and soundoff's, ask question, listen to some setups. Most people who take their car to a soundoff love showing off their system anyway. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

that is very true sir... i probably could learn

a lot...

but the problem is that i am such a noob

and //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/chicken.gif.218ea7401db50d5e31a7e0b37e05e21e.gif

i may be over my head... at least hear i can

regulate the flow of information into my

head and you guys are your own checks

and balences... some dude telling me

about his kick *** setup wont necessarily

help me as much as you guys do... it would

just give me a chance to actually HEAR the

stuff...

Thanks for the compliment //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif I wasn't trying to argue, just wondering if the whole bigger = better lower freq response was true or not. So from what I can gather, a 12 vs 15 in equal boxes, the 15 would have better lows. Thanks for the tip //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

And Squeak, your right, I've never heard an IDMAX 15 :p Thats the main problem, I've heard plenty of differant 12's and 15's, but never in similar setups that I could really compare.

i used to have a 15'' Kicker CompVR dual 4 ohm sub but i blew it with 1000 watts rms, the sub was installed in a sealed box and i took it too a competition and i got a 146.5 db's my car was a 93 Pontiac Grand Am.

i blew the sub playing "BME Click" by Lil Jon of the Kings of Crunk cd, has lower bass then Late Night Tip by Three 6 mafia.

simple????? 10's are sexy cuz of its punchy sound.... 12's are sexy cuz its inbetween deep bass and punchy * the best size if u ask me * 15's are just crappy
Say what, I have a 15 in my car and it plays just as well if not better then the 2 12's I had there before. You want punchy throw the 15 in a sealed box.

Everybody that I know that says 15's sound like crap have sony, pyle, and pyramid. Once they stepped into my car that changed real quick (which by the way is a minivan).

The key thing is you need to do more then drop a 15 in the back of the car to sound good. The 15 is going to be naturally louder then the 12 so it will expose the lack of other components in you system which will make it sound like crap. I for one learned this when I installed my 15 initially. When it completly overpowered the whole sound in the car, I realized that my front stage is severely lacking and now I am currently working at it.

The 15 is only the foundation of the system. You still have to build on top of it. That means adding midbass and high ranges to you system. Disconnect your regular speakers and just play the woofer by itself (no matter what size). Then tell me you still believe that 10's and 12's 'sound better' then a 15.

Again, it's the box that gives the sub a "sound", not the diameter of the sub. If you heard a crappy 15, then it's either because the box was crappy in design and/or construction, or you just heard a really low quality 15 (legacy, pyramid, jensen, etc)...........but it wasn't because it was a 15. And if you heard a punchy 10, it's because the box was probably too small and gave it a peaky response in the lower midbass area (generally what makes people think a sub is "punchy"), not because it was a 10" sub.
