Whats going on here?

quick question....when my car is off my batt reads 12.7volts...which means it fully charged.....when i turn my car on..my batt reads 16.7 and go's up to 18.1...and it go's up and down from 14.9 to 17.5 and some times over 18volts again...what do u guys think i could b experiencing?

A bad DMM? Maybe you should get a 2nd opinion or a new DMM, but as of right now, no one can tell you anything without physically looking at your car in person, besides the fact you didn't mention any details about your set up and ride.

Have your alternator checked out. It could be on it's way out.

heard that the alternator's charging or some kind of power regulator can cause higher voltages. some guy had a similar problem a month or so ago? didn't remember exactly what he said it was...

80, the alts regulator is cooked.

Time for a new one, unless you want to cook all of your cars electronics

hmm

i want to replace the alt all together

but i'm not sure if my alt has a internal or external regulator

i'll find out 2day

If its external thats better, internal...not so good

if your car is the one in your avitar, then it's a nissan and notorious for having the voltage regulators go out. You best bet is to have a nissan dealer take a look at it, because it is probably covered under the recall. If you're looking to upgrade to a HO alt, your best bet is ohio generator.

since when is a battery resting at 12.7 fully charged?

from using the search button that nobody likes 2 use and reading old threads about batts and other electrical situations

most batteries i know of when fully charged read over 13v. on our batteries 12.6 is about half charged
