whats better .5ohm or 2ohm?

Depends. Obviously if the amp isn't 0.5Ohm stable then 2Ohm would be better. Neither is better than the other, per say, one option just puts out more power than the other.

ok. someone was telling me that running your subs at higher impedence shortens the life of them. is that true?

lets say the power output would be the same and the amp is .5 stable then what

There is no more heat created in the sub woofer by adding impedance. It just lowers how much power it gets. .5 will get louder but will have more distortion while 2 ohms is quieter but will sound cleaner.

Go run 1000W through a sub @ 1Ohm. Run it through again @ 4Ohm. Measure the temperatures.
