Dayton vs Type R shouldn't be a hard decision. I think it's hard for people to consider a HT sub in their car and that's where people will sway towards the Alpines, but the DIYMA folk love Dayton.

For $200 you can get two Alpine R8s, but you then need a custom box. The standard recipe is to put a couple into a ~1.1cu ft ported box tuned in low 30s. I have heard of people using tuning frequencies between 30 and 35Hz and run up to 400watts to each sub. The question is how long a port you can fit. The lower tuning requires a longer port. Alternatively, a $200 buys you SBR, which is single R8 in Alpine's custom box that's tuned pretty low. So you pay just $100 for the custom box, which is a good deal. The Dayton HO10 is supposed to be very good, but for the budget it seems like you can afford just one. They also have pretty low sensitivity. Two HO10s will be about as loud as R8s on equal power. The HO10s do have a little bit more power handling at the limit (600watts vs 400-ish for R8s)

If you want to go with a sealed box, I suggest something like Infinity Kappa 120.9w in a 1cu ft sealed box being fed 250-500watts of power. For me this gives a good blend with the fronts, clean smooth sound. I like. It costs about $150 online and you can spend $50 on a pre-fab sealed box. When the price of Image Dynamics IDQv3 or Peerless XXLS comes down just below of $200 that's also a good deal.

Some people have used Sundown SA-10 and SA12 subwoofers in SQL applications, where in the right box they can deliver a good SQ and SPL, though that's a less traveled path as it seems like most people buy and configure these for SPL.

I've been using this one for years and it's still going strong, my friends are shocked at how good it sounds and most think I'm running two subs when they hear it.

Your friend offered me a Rockford Fosgate P600-1BD for $250 and now says he'll give it to me for $180 would this be a good amp for the Dayton and would this be a fair price. How much lower should I try to push the price?

Yep, price is fair. All his amps have only been run in show cars. For 180 it's a fair deal.

it looks like on eBay some used ones sold for like $80 and some like new ones sold for less than $150 should i try to talk him down a little more to at least $150?

It's worth a shot, but be careful to make sure it doesn't burn you. He already dropped price well below 10% (standard practice), so you don't want to scare him off.

Remember ebay is auction and "like new" can mean just about anything these days...sure it looks nice and pretty in pictures, but without the covers removed, you really can't tell. At least dealing with someone locally you can have a fallback in case there's any issues with the amp.

I messaged someone on eBay that's selling one for $180 obo if they would sell it for $150 they said they would give me it for $160 should I just email your guy and ask him if he can beat the price?
