Yup, I tend to use a course thread screw with a hex head so I can drive them in with 1/4" socket driver...very tight and they won't strip.

yeh coarse thread 1 1/4" red box or 1 5/8" orange box

Fine threads allow more torque than coarse. More surface area in contact allows this. Common sense. Check here (compare 1/4-20 to 1/4-28 for example)

theres this contractors supply warehouse nearr me where we get it, galvanized too for 1.79 a pound with a minimum order of only 10 pounds

Subwoofer Hold-Down screws from Home Depot. They're a little more expensive than regular wood screws, but they seem to have at least twice the holding power as comparable wood screws.
