I use one that about the size of the shaft of the screw

the make special drill bits for predilling and counter sinking so you can do countersinking and predrilling both with one bit. Got to like a lowes or home depot as they have them. They will say what diameter screw they are for like a #6 or a #8 size screw. Just ask someone there and they will show you exactly what you need as long as you know the screw diameter. They cost around $5.

FYI - I usually like to use a #8 or a #10 size screw depending on what size of box i am making. For the 1 and 1/2 or smaller length screw i will use a #8 but for 1 3/4 and bigger i will use a #10.

^^link doesn't work.

I use a normal bit for drilling and countersinking, just back the bit out a little, and make circles to widen out the top of the hole. Probably not as easy as a countersinking bit, but it works.

ok thanks guys, the guy at home depot sold me a 6 but when i went to predrill it wasnt long enough.

1/8" drill bit, 1/2" countersink

i personally like the above because it has everything in one that way you don't have to mess with two different bits. Simplifies everything, but that is just me.

i bought one today and i like it alot, mine is a #6 hitachi and the length is adjustable and the bit can be replace.......not to say that the others don't have these feature, but this is the only type I found, cost about 5 Bucks.
