what i thought was clipping wasnt? ..

So i have an old autotech amp on an old jl 12 sub.

when i turn the amp up (just to set the gains and what not) it sounds pretty good, but i thought it was clipping. (the whole system would stop playing for a split second. so i went up to a local audio place, and one of the guys that ive been gettin to know came out and took a look/listen, and said na it wasn't clipping. he said i did a good job of setting the levels, and that it was just the cd skipping... lol yeah lammeee so i guess i should just upgrade my cd deck?

right now its an old eclipse unit my that my uncle used with his system (the one i have right now)

im think the alpine ixa-100. the mechless one, for use with an ipod. ive been diggin this for a while. its either this one of one of the 9887 or so.. good choice?

should i probably upgrade this next?

And why are you talking about clipping and your deck skipping in the subwoofer section? Probably get alot better response in the head unit section if you're asking about deck's.

OP, it happens, but not till ur really loud usually (150's+), and even then it's relatively easily preventable in most cases

either way I recommend just switching to something you can use a flash drive or ipod with

if its skipping with the ipod too, then the headunit is not a problem. See the link on how to set gain. Even easier check the amp light and you'll see it goes into protect. If so , then set your gain with a dmm and check the quality of your ground

If its bottoming out on low notes you have shitty subs or you need to turn the gain down. Dont know your setup but alot of low end subs sound great for the most part but for the low lows they ****. Also see what your subsonic filter is set at, should be around 20-25hz depending on your subs.

I highly doubt your installer was able to detect or understand what clipping was...

its and old jl 12w7? i think. it was in a sealed shallow box that fit under the back seat

so yeah its definitely a pretty low end sub.
