Just wondering if anyone here has ever had a sub make a noise i can only describe as someone shaking a sheet of tinfoil. Its only when the sub hits lows at like 30hz. It just started doing it, could it be the spyders?

sounds like the coils started tearing apart around the former... i had a L5 in my gf's truck do the same thing... eventually blew a couple days later

thanks for the quick replies. so do you guys think i should just buy a new cone for it? it doesnt make any noise on high notes or when the power is off and i push down on the cone. only when volume is up 60 percent and its smacking lows.

Well what kind of sub is it? Depending on what it is it may be repairable... and do you have a DMM? (fluke/greenlee/etc multimeter)

yeah i have a DMM. it's an Orion HCCA 15.2. recone kit is available. should i check the resistance?

Yes. if its reading 0 or something pretty far off a coil is bad

Well i was kinda thinking that too but the L5 i had in my girls truck only sounded "like tinfoil" on the lower bass notes. It could hang w/ the ~45hz (guesstimate) notes all day and you couldnt hear it... but im not arguing you bc you could be absolutely right! Im just going off of experience

alright so i checked it with the dmm. and its stable at 1 which is how i have it wired. I turned the frequency on the amp from about 80hz to the 150hz mark and the noise seems to have pretty much went away temporarily or something. Its a low frequency subwoofer so why would it have been bottoming out? something with my box maybe? its a 5.6 cubic ft box tuned to 33hz with 83inches of port. i have the high pass on my amp and itelli q switched off. gain is set to 44v with the DMM.
