What can you do when you can't make the box big enough

Hey guys,

It's been a few years since I've done a system. I'm a bit rusty on the finer points. I'm not going for any competition; just picked up a simple setup to improve my ride.

I have the Sony XSL102P5 sub to put into my '93 Ford Explorer. It calls for 1cu. ft. sealed. For the music I listen to I want to go w/ a sealed box. I'd also like to put it in the "bin" in the back. Q-logic makes the custom box, but it's only .65 Cu.ft. WAY to small. I can build an MDF box in the wall behind the panel, but I don't know yet if I can get enough volume. Are there options? Someone once told me some baffling put in the box will make up for a lack of cu.ft. Is this accurate?

I figure taking the size of the sub into account, I'd really need to have about 1.25cu.ft. when all's said and done, right? Thanks for the help...

does that mean for him to make the .65 cuft he would need .35 x 1.5 lbs of poly fill?

so about 1/2 lb poly fill to compensate for the small box?

Well since the .65 is BEFORE the displacement of the sub ( i believe), it'd be more... I'm going to make my own enclosure and try to use more of the space behind the panel; try to get closer to 1 cu.ft. However, with the displacement I will most likely have to put between .35 to .5 cu. ft. worth of polyfill... Doesn't seem too bad... And I know I can make it look just as good as the Q-logic, for much less than the 180 they want for it...

actually for a .65cu box you would need closer to lb.

.65x1.5=0.975

I would start there and if it doesnt sound right, then +/- till it sounds right to you.

Several of the sites I visit seem to say 16oz of loose polyfill per cubed space. Make sure not to pack it tight since it'll lose the effect it's creating.

x2, I wouldn't stuff it too much.

You will be fine running the sub in a smaller enclosure than recommended. Subs are very versatile. They can be placed in many box sizes. If you can get .65ft^3 than do it and add about 1/2 to 3/4 pounds of polyfill to the enclosure.

Then bump away.

experiment. test different amounts. you may find that your box is adequate without any fill.
