welding wire.

So I get to a job site today and there are welders and electricians putting machines in these giant concrete pits my company poured. There's 000g welding wire laying EVERYWHERE. Then I walk around the corner and I nearly cream my shorts. They have rolls of wire for these machines on pallets. There 3/0g and each roll is 750 feet long. There's about 15 pallets of these. So I start talking to the guy about car audio and to make a long story short he said he could get me some of the new wire and possibly some of there old welding wire they have on the truck. The new wire lookes identicle to audio wire. Thin strands of solid copper.

So is there any difference between this and car wire besides flexability? He asked how much I need and I was like "uhh, 3 15 foot secrions would be nice but the more the marrier" and he said that shouldn't be a problem. If he comes through this would be sweet.

Also what is the going rate for 0 and 000 welding wire used on the forums?

000 would be expensive....like 5+ per foot....and there's nothing really different about it other than strand count\flexibility which isn't at all a problem

I use 2/0 welding wire and have no problems at all. Its about $2.50/ft at weldingsupply.com. It isnt as flexible as say kicker but i had no problems running 35ft of it in my truck.

I'm using the orange 1/0 Ultra-Flex from welding supply.com and the inner wire core is considerably thicker than some Knu and JL 1/0 wire that I have. It's good stuff!

If you someone doesn't have access to "free" welding wire, the 1/0 power wire that is sold at napa works good too. I have no idea what welding power wire costs but the napa stuff was around $1 a foot if i remember right. Its stiff as hell though.

well heres how it went. as we were leaving the site on friday night the guy came up to us. we had been working behind these big oil drums that are about 40 feet high. he said that there would be a pile of wire for me on monday. once again, we will see if he comes through. i dont know why he would have went out of his way to come over and tell me that if he didnt have any intention on getting it for us...

Well durr. Welding wire is usually NOT OFC, and is not tinned. Meaning it will oxidize quite a bit sooner than comparable OFC/Tinned car audio wire, maybe lose a few tenths of a volt tops... after it's year old.

Other than that, not much... I used to use welding wire... until I got 50ft. rolls of Kicker HyperFlex 1/0 for less than welding wire..
