weird situation

i recently bought a jbl px600.2 amplifier to power a pioneer 12" dual voice coil champion series subwoofer. Now that i have hooked up the system to play at 4 ohm the woofer just keeping jumpin it doesn't jus to the music but it jus jumps and the protect light on the amp comes on at even a volume of 2 .......the output is not even half of what waz expected any ideas what causin this...

the protect light doesnt come on as soon as you turn it on right? if music isnt playing...

a bad ground possibly?
