im gonna save to get a new hu and im thinking about trying active. i was looking at the 9887 and the 800prs. does the 800prs have active capabilities? it looked like it did but i could be wrong. are there any advantages or disadvantages to each other than the price difference?

yes, the 800prs or even the older 880prs are both active. I have had the 9887, 800 and 880..lol. I prefer the look and controls of the Pioneer 800/880 over the Alpine. Prcie isn't that much different (at least on ebay).

you obviously need more time searching and figuring out what is what. If don't know what specs would make an HU have "active capabilities," then you probably shouldn't go active...

just because everyone's doing it, doesn't mean you should.... yet at least.

it's like what your mom says about your friends jumping off bridges... learn how to swim first.

james, i wont be going active for a while yet, i still need to get the money for a new hu. i am researching and reading about going active. i looked at the pioneer controls and was able to figure it had active capabilities. just wanted to double check. nothing wrong with that. so, back to my original ? are there any disadvantages between the 9887 and the 800prs?

9887 has better Ipod controls, i.e. it is faster with accessing the Ipod and what not, but you need the Imprint tuning module to take advantage of its "advanced" tuning features.

The 800 offers better EQ options out the box. The down side to the 800 requires a break out box for your Ipod, has a motorized face, and you will be subject to that dаmn annoying pico fuse problem.

I once had to drive back to Louisiana from Florida listening to the same CD and the radio because my motorized face died on the Sony CDX-C90 that I had in my car. That is the sole reason I despise motorized face head units....

buy my jvc arsenal, 3 way active crossover network, its too much for me, selling it for the same reason i sold my 880prs, never going to use those features. its brand new, got it 2 weeks ago, installed a week ago, has 2 year square trade warranty that is transferable, if they cant fix it, you get a full refund.

Pm me with a price. I have a HU, but I might be interested in this one being that my car has a JVC disc changer that I was never gonna use. I still have the cord ran for it.

OP, I say if you got the money, get the Pioneer 800PRS. I have it and have not run into that Pico issue going on 1 year. Eclipse makes some decent units that are active capable too. CD 7200MKii comes to mind. I am going to use the cd 7000 for my next instal.
