Vinyl to Cd converter

My dad got one of his old David Gilmore records converted to a cd down at the old music shop in town. When he came home and put it into the cd burner to make me a copy, the Gracenote tool off of iTunes was able to identify the album and every single song. How in hell was it able to do this?

I'm aware that data is burned into cd's for this kind of stuff, but was it done to records also?

Actually a good number of those programs use an algorythm to detect things like song times etc. So it can search out the total number of songs and then match that to the total time to get the song listings.

Or, they just manually entered.

If you are really interested try this little test. Make a copy of a cd, but don't name it and don't let it get titles. Then, put the cd in a computer and let something like media player open it. Most of the time, unless you mixed the songs it should name the tracks and album for ya.

Hmm, I see what you are saying now.

But still just to go with it a little more, would the code picked up from the record not be fairly different from that stored tracks due to the imperfections in the vinyl?

exactly what i was thinking. how could an analog vinyl store information about it's tracks. the only way a cd does so is because iit's stored onto the disk and is read by the computer.

Exactly what Im trying to ask, thank you.

Im not that learned on the topic of analog records vs CDs. How are the dynamics of a record, are they compressed deeply by the producer just as CDs are? What do you sacrifice by transferring the record to the new medium? Can you maintain the dynamics (if superior)?

Im asking this, because im aware that tool released Lateralus on vinyl and maybe Aenima and I know for certain that the Downward Spiral was released on vinyl. These being two extremely dynamic bands live, I was hoping that maybe some of this was preserved in the vinyl as opposed to the digital version. Maybe im just day dreaming...is it worth pursuing?
