im curious to know how much does the subwoofer enclosure really make when it comes to bass/spl/sound quality?

right now i have a kicker 15" in a vented box and its pretty much taking up my whole trunk (2dr civic). and i wanted to know what will i lose as of performance wise if i were to go sealed or small ported over the very huge vented box?

i dont know the fhz of the vented box cause i got it off eBay, but it slams nice and hard. heres a link http://forums.caraudio.com/vb/attachment.php?attachmentid=3430

80% install, 10% equipment, 10%... beer //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

would it be a dramatic downgrade to go from vented to sealed?

Depends on what you consider a "downgrade" //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

Output would decrease, but SQ would likely increase. To me, that's an upgrade //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/tongue.gif.6130eb82179565f6db8d26d6001dcd24.gif

my main reason is to save trunk space.

as much as the bass/spl/db decreases, would the SQ increase just as much as giving away?

would a medium ported work or a large sealed?

Ported increases SPL by 20 dB now ???
Ported generally increases average output by ~3 dB (can be as high as 6 dB), so that's what you'll be missing .... roughly equivalent to half the power ...

Going with a smaller ported enclosure can save space and you won't sacrifice as much output as going to sealed ...
well according to the frequency chart of my subs... Pionner 2000SPL's... the subs can reach average levels of +5db at its tuning frequency of 38hz... in a sealed box, the same frequency has an average output of about -8db, so thats about a 13db increase in output @ 38hz by going ported!

That's a very considerable increase in SPL... and thats why I definitely want to go ported this summer, cuz my amp sucks and cant handle them in a 1.00 cu ft sealed box. (it still gets nice and loud, though!) //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif
