Urgent computer help needed.

My friend's explorer.exe decided it didn't need to run anymore. On top of that, it won't even run when opened with the run command in task manager. I have no idea where to begin with the registry, if it would even be a registry problem. If anyone knows of a good registry cleaner that I don't have to buy in order to get more than "there are registry problems", that'd be great. Would running a hijackthis help?

The last option I'll do is a format, which isn't a problem for him, since he's not a music buff or anything. I just hate doing it. He is a PC gamer primarily, so getting it up and running is a main priority.

However, his punk *** does not have a floppy drive, and he wants to run RAID. Am I safe to assume I can put the files on a flash drive, and windows setup will detect it?

Thanks a bunch to anyone who can provide help.

Well, without explorer I'm not sure how you are planning on backing up his files. But anyway don't reformat, just reinstall windows. Its not perfect, but it will replace the system files and at least allow you to back everything up properly.

As far as raid goes, what version of windows is it? XP? There are a decent amount of drivers built in for the more mainstream chips so it shouldnt' be an issue.

Ok I just read the post, you meant put files on for drivers..thinking...

Your only option if the driver isn't in windows, is it make a slipstreamed disc with the drivers implemented in there. Search for it on google, theres a bazillion tutorials.

Man I don't miss windows...

As far as the registry goes, HJT only addresses start up, and web browser related issues. Some newer mother boards will allow the drivers for a RAID setup, which I would recommend against anyways, from a USB thumb drive, but most of them still won't do it. On the other hand, for the last couple years, some of the motherboards have come with a bootable CD with the RAID drivers on there, which you can install from, and then go on from there. There's also alot of tutorials on how to create a bootable disk with the RAID drivers from the floppy.
