I don't see the problem then. If they set it 5% clipping and get a false positive at 1%, it's still 1% clipping and the difference is almost totally inaudible in both distortion and output. The problem is not all amps / HUs are made equal. A lot won't stay distortion free at full output. My Alpine is an example. Sure, the device can tell a sine from a triangle, but a triangular wave unclipped would give a false positive. It seems more like you need a device sensitive to DC power, but not AC.

the problem exists if you are a SPL competitor -- you may want to limit distortion to 5%, but if you read 1% as 5% you could have turned up the gain just a bit more...

non-sine waves should always trigger the "distortion" as they are not sine waves. the device will only be meant to be used with sine waves. the device cannot determine clipping from arbitrary wave forms.

the device would be able to determine the point of clipping of a HU.
