underpowering subs

You would be surprised what you can do with 75-100 watts ish
No, actually I wouldn't.

You would have to be intentionally TRYING to blow 300w subs with that amp - even then it would be nearly impossible. That's assuming the 300w rating is a fairly accurate representation of the power they can dissipate.

op as long as you dont start clipping them you will be fine. i have ran many subs underpowered and ran them for years that way. if you have a good amp then you can get by with it until you can upgrade or if you just want a lil bump to your system go along the lines of what i mentioned before. as long as you have a decent amp. what amp is it that you have?
So if its a cheap amp, underpowering the subs will hurt them?

So the size of your pecker is like the quality of the amp, and the gain settings are like your thrusting capability? And impedance would be how tight and wet she is.
exactly. brilliant.

your posts are now getting a bit more enjoyable. kicking facts can get boring after a while. gotta mix it up a bit. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

My girlfriend doesn't seem to like the new me so much. I just called her all excited and told her to get ready for tonight, cuz I was gonna turn up my gains and lower her impedance rise.
I could literally hear her roll her eyes over the phone.

So does that make a big low tuned nicely carpeted enclosure like a nice pair of D's and a small sealed bare plywood box like an A cup?

if its a cheap amp more than likely it wont provide enuff power in the first place and would be overrated at 75x2 and will clip very easily. should of maybe been a bit more clear on that maybe.

if it's a cheap over-rated amp it will produce less power from the start, and therefore less power when it's clipped.

A high quality under-rated 75w amp is much more likely to damage speakers of any size than a low quality over-rated 75w amp.

My coworkers looked at me funny cos I just laughed pretty loud and I've been quiet the entire day.

well if you want to look at it that way.but thats not why i stated if it was cheap and asked what amp it was because we all know what is going to happen if it is a cheap amp and that is its not going to push these subs and the op will then try and get more out of it providing a clipped signal. if it is a good amp this will not be necessary because it should provide a decent amount of power to run a sub or a set of low wattage subs without clipping. your comparing the clipped signal of amps.

I'm just trying to compare apples to apples.

It doesn't matter if you're running Phass or Pyramid.

The amp that can produce the most power has the highest chance of damaging whatever speakers are connected to it.

It never fails in a "how much (or little) power can I give these subs" thread that someone says just run a quality amp that produces the same or more rms power than the speaker's rating when the fact is that an amp that has those qualities is much more likely to cause damage than an over-rated cheap amp.
