It seems that every brand that once made respectable amps for an affordable price have been bought out or taken over by some shitty parent company. They shift all their manufacturing to some arbitrary build house in Asia minor. Quality suffers and amps ****. Are there any companies left that still create great amps for an affordable price? Orion, Soundstream, hifonics, Lanzar, etc all made great amps whose quality has fallen in recent years. Any good amp makers left that won't charge 1000 dollars for a 2X200watt at 4 ohmn amp?

new alpine amps are great in terms of SQ but kinda lakc in terms of how loud they go, some of the 02 04 and 04 fosgates are awsome, i even know a place that still stocks 02 03 04 alpine, fosgate, orion, jl, nakamichi and companies of that nature i could set up something for you at a reasonable price as my friends dad owns it

well, remember, it's where and 'how' an amp is designed is what will determine it's power and features. Just because of the buildhouse location should not...there are plenty of amps out now that will either do a ton of power, or hae functionality to do wonderful things.

Where as I agree that there are still some decent amps out there .................there is still NO denying that the quality has gone way south of most car electronics in the USA. Everything is mass produced and worst of all.......its mostly outsourced to Asian companies.

Sad but true.//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

I agree, there is some good amps still out there, but disagree on the quality on all has gone down, since the out sourcing.
And remember, Honda cars were first made by Asians....still one of the best cars out there....heck, a huge majority of what we use, wear, etc is not made in the USA anymore...

I think all quality in everything has gone down. Am I a pessimist? Maybe. Honda being one of the best cars out there is YOUR opinion.........an opinion I do not share. Its a rice burner and I would NEVER own one. I know a huge majority of stuff we wear isn't made here but I can't run around *****. Believe me that would be one UGLY sight. Car audio has gone down hill and continues to go downhill. I mean look at the demand in this country. Everyone wants pretty lights and "bang for the buck" and something that plays mp3s. How many really "high end" companies still sell their high end stuff in the states.?? Not too many. Denon car audio in the US is a thing of the past. Pioneer ODR is not sold here anymore. Those are just a few examples.

Edit: Sony ES is another example. I'll add more as they come to mind.

well Honda, for example is still one of the best built cars made, no matter where it's done now....they still lead the tehnology side, most newer cars are like Bic lighters, good for awhile, then they fall apart.

I think the main problem about car audio, sales are getting smaller and smaller, so the market share is smaller, B&M stores are less and less. Nowdays, consumers have too many other options to buy other 'goodies' and not car audio.

Why is the high end sales gone, you guessed it, you, me, consumers...we don't want to pay high retail prices, so all manufactures of everything have to make things appealing again.

But as far as technology, I see it in leaps and bounds over the days when I attended IASCA in 1988....leaps and bounds better.

Gotta agree with ya. technology has come a long way. Quality of these amps havent changed and if anything have gotten better over the years. It's just peoples perception of what quality is has changed more than anything

I totally disagree that amps have gotten better. They are all using cheap *** surface mount technology and that does NOT match the "thru hole" technology of the past no matter what you think. I will say that technology as a whole has gotten better since thats unstoppable. But "build quality" is in the shitter for the most part. As far as consumers not wanting to pay high retail prices goes: speak for yourself. I for one wouldn't mind paying top dollar for something if I knew it was of top quality. The reason the mfgs can get away with charging less is because the merchandise is worth less. Why? Lower quality parts used in the manufacturing of the amps. No such thing as a free lunch and car audio is NO exception to this rule I'm afraid. You don't have to believe me if you don't want to thats totally up to you but I know the truth.

Anyone ever consider getting a few local EEs together and designing a line of kit amps for the car? Finding and building high quality amps for home use is easy, y noe for the car? I'd love to build mine and not deal with this.

Is the ODR head unit the same thing as the P9? Or is it an even better unit?

The ODR stuff is better than the P9 in my opinion and its price tag is huge in comparison however. The P9 was made for the US. There is a Carrozeria version of this though. It was basically made to take the place of the ODR system in the US. Not enough people demand the ODR stuff anymore so they made something that is cheaper for here so it would sell. The P9 follows the same basic idea as the ODR but just isn't of the same quality.
