Types of wood? to build boxes out of...

Well usually for car boxes I would use MDF and carpet it...

But in this case I'm looking to build boxes for my Home...

I know I could use MDF, but I would have to deal with wrapping them in vinyl...

My question is what other sheets of wood could I use, that would help me build a good box out of & be able to stain for cosmetics?

Something along the lines of finished plywood would be awesome but its like $45 a sheet, and I'm not sure if it would be good to make boxes out of...

Baltic Birch looks good. Some builders actually use it for car audio use as well.

Yes, that is an option as well. Actually comes in a variety of veneers.

Parts Express sells a black woodgrain veneer you can apply to a box. Looks pretty good too.

MDF paints well.. Or you could do some sort of laminate?..

Hmm I am going to check out HD on that Birch and MDf with the Veneer on it...

Don't feel like laminating or wrapping myself...

when we do home boxes, most of them are built out of mdf...with a deadener on the inside of the enclosure, we even tried resin with buckshot like gary biggs did in his regal...sounded pretty good.

do a light coat of kitty hair over the seems, sand it down...then hit it with bondo...sand it down...

also you could use 13 ply birch (not home depot stuff) and just stain it..but you'd still have the seems because you couldn't fill the seems and have the stain look correctly

MDF with a 1/4" veneer of your choice would work nicely. If the enclosure isn't huge you can make it look like an end table or whatever. Lots of pics on some of the hometheater sites, so do some searching...

Yeah I would go with MDF and a veneer.Just angle cut the sides so the edges meet and brad nail.Then fill the holes with spot putty and stain away....!
