Type R vs. Type S

I want to know what differences I would find between these two? I looked at the specs for the Type E through the Type X, and the Type S looked very similar to the Type R, so I decided to buy it, because the amp I had was pushing out 350W RMS. I was told that if I was underpowering the Type R, it would pretty much be useless to buy, so I stuck with my choice. Now I'm kind of having second thoughts, and after my sub was installed, I was wondering how much different it would sound with a Type R in there. If I use the same enclosure, same amp, and same wiring, what kind of audible difference would there be in swapping the sub out? For comparison of the Type S and Type R, I used this site:http://www.crutchfield.com/S-D80NI95d8VP/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?g=520&id=features_and_specs&i=500SWS1242#Tab and also Alpine's specs from their site. What I found interesting was that a lot of the figures were different between Alpine's site and Crutchfield's. Anyways, thanks for any input.

i can help you a little on this one i had the type E subs with a 760 explode i smoked both subs junk. then i baught the type R and with the 760 w to the type R's they pound dam good and i no that amp is way under powering those subs. ide say go witht the type r there rated more rms. and there all around a better sub imo.

uh oh

Anyhow what kind of box is the type s in? I would not recommend running it only 350... shit I ran 500 to my older ones w/o any problems. With that amp I doubt you'll notice much if anything.

500W to Type S's? ****.....

Right now, they are in a sealed enclosure that's a little over a cubic foot. But it's not the greatest box, so I'm thinking I might have to just build a better one and mess around with settings until I get it down. I was just wondering if the Type R would sound any different with what I have now. Also, why is it that the cone area of the Type S is larger than the Type R?

Like this quote taken from a thread in another forum:

"I just want to know if anybody other than myself feels that ALPINE has kinda cheapened out on their decks and speakers (not subs (except the type-S)) AFTER 2004...????"

Notice how the Type S gets bashed on more than babies at a Planned Parenthood clinic?

Well the type s is bashed for a good reason... it aint all that good. Dude you made a big mistake if you bought them from crutchfield, i know cuz thats where i bought mine and you can get'em for 85 plus shipping. I actually heard the brand new type E is pretty good. I understand you going with Alpine cuz its a good company(thats why I went with them) but from a couple months on this board i found tons of other stuff out there. This is my suggestion keep the S save some money at the same time read reviews talk to friends and ppl on here and then when you got some cash sell your stuff and buy some good stuff. By the way I have 2 Type S 12's with a profile 600 watt amp.

Hehe, actually, I am. I didn't actually get it from Crutchfield, I just used them for spec comparisons. But I got it off of Ebay for about $90 shipped or something, so I'm not out too much. And I can try to sell that and buy a Type R at my work (Best Buy) for around $120. So I wouldn't be out too much money if I could upgrade to a subwoofer that produces far better sound. But maybe I'd have to build a bigger box to compensate for a lower sensitivity? At any rate, I could just get the Type R and use it with my current amp and always upgrade later. I was just hoping for some opinions soon, because I will be quitting my job pretty soon here.
