Type R vs HDS

I am looking at both of these subs, they are both priced the same where I am shopping.

Which sub would you guys prefer based on performance of sound quality, loudness, and durability?

Alpine Type R 12

SoundQubed HDS312

I'm picking a dual 4ohm voice coil sub either way.

The type R can work in small enclosures pretty well. Can work in both sealed and ported with good results. The HDS312 requires a bigger box and does not work well in sealed. The soundqubed subs are much more bang for buck IMO. Way more output for less money. So if you're buying 2 subs, consider the space it's gonna take up when going ported. Anywhere from 2.25- 2.5 cubes net would be ideal for each HDS sub. The type R can work as little as 1.6 each ported but you can certainly put it in a bigger box for more efficiency. Don't skimp out on box either. You should definitely hit up @CSCStang for a custom enclosure. He can hook you up for a good price too.

What car is this going in and what amp are you gonna run?

It's going in a 04 Cavalier Z22 trunk. For now I have a Infinity 1600A from my last system that can power 1 sub. Will have to step up amps if I go for the 24" set up.

2 12"s = a 24" set up. yes.Regardless, you are not contributing anything meaningful to this thread.
Surface Area of 24 is 3.14 x 12 x 12 = 452.16.

Surface Area of 12 is 3.14 x 6 x 6 = 113.04. X 2(number of subs) = 226.08

A 24 inch sub would be the equivalent of running 4 12" subs. Each 12 needs 2 cubic feet if NET airspace to function properly and get loud properly. 2 cubic feet net means after accounting in space the sub and por takes up. Before accounting that in, youd need a 13-14ish cubic feet gross box for a 24.

box for two 12s would be around 5.5-6 cubes gross ending up to be 4 cubic feet net to 5 cubes.

When someone corrects, your misconception, do not disregard their advice as not contributing anything because future newbies reading this thread will be misinformed with wrong information.

Just say its two 12s man. Dont say 24.

Yes, you should measure how much space you're willing to give up because 2 12" subs will take up a significant amount of your trunk. If your alternator is stock, then you might need to add more batteries or upgrade your alternator or both. Depends on how low you dip on your voltage when blasting your music full tilt.

As for your original question, the hds300 series have a much better motor structure along with a stronger cone and bigger 3 inch voice coil compared to the alpines 2.5 inch voice coil. Ived owned type R subs before with loads of power on them and proper boxes. Lets just say they were mediocre at best. They can sound good in smaller boxes, thats their only advantage over the hds300s. If both subs are given proper box and power, the hds 300 will walk all over the type R in everyway.

You have 600RMS amp to play with so I wouldn't do the HDS3 (needs more power,). If you got adequate power for a single HDS3 (upgrade to a 1000-1200 watt amp) you would be better with dual sa 12s
HDS3 doesn't make sense in your situation (would underpower it currently and if you got more power, you'd be better off with two 12s since you said that's another option your looking at).

Okay, I was using wrong terms. Thank you for teaching me jeff.

So guys I'm thinking maybe I'll just chuck out the cash for a SA12 so I don't have to buy a new amp. I've heard that the SQ HDS3 series is about similar to Sundowns SA?
