Type R 15 VS L7 15

jeebus... I've heard both many times, in many different applications and can't stand what I've heard from the L7's. Sounds like a trunk full of factory 6x9"s in the 1980's in every installation. Loud? Yup. Quality/accuracy/low-end-extension/linear response?

Granted, and to avoid having to put on my flame suit: ALL SUBWOOFER RESULTS ARE INSTALL-DEPENDENT -- it's possible that EVERY setup I've heard with L7's were done poorly.

But, judging from the rule of averages, more than half of the Type R installs I've experienced were actually impressive, all things considered.

Plus, unless you're in high school, you'll probably think the Kicker square woofs look very silly (not that looks have anything to do with sound).

Just my humble opinion.

yes, install dependant, any woofer can sound amazing, or like garbage done correctly, or incorrectly.

To sum it up... I will never recommend an L7 to a friend, over a Type R or almost any other decent woof (and I'm far from a type R fanboi), based solely on the fact that normal people with little experience can make a Type R's sound pretty durn good, and people calling themselves "pro's" who do it for a living haven't turned out a L7 setup yet (that I've heard) that didn't make me have to focus on not expressing my disgust with the expression on my face, to the person showing it off... I'd have to say that, all things considered, including installation, the L7 is just not even a consideration (unless you want to be loud -- it's as easy to be loud with the L7 as it is to sound good with the Type R, IMO... and the Type R is still pretty durn easy to get loud)

well, from the SQ vehicles I have sat in over the years, I have been impressed with almost all brands, yes, L7 included. It's in the install, and how well the system images and integrates. If you don't reccomend one, I'm fine with that, but stating they 'do not' have SQ is false as well. Too much history proving different. But I have heard W7 installs that were sick to me, and I know it's not the drivers fault. There are plenty of the so called 'pro's doing amazing installs in SQ with the L7, as well as many other drivers. You may like a flat butterworth alighnment, but to another, they may like a tad more lowend, or visa versa. A person will install it to what sounds best to them unless you are talking about a full fledge SQ based (USACi and IASCA) rule book car.

If the R is what you perfer, I'm totally ok with it, but if you've never heard a great L7 install, come to USACi Wolrd Finals and I'll set you in a couple cars, just so you can have a chance to really listen to them, done correctly.

I'd love to. No sarcasm intended. I really would.

The beauty of the art is in the engineering and installation. Some equipment just can't be appreciated for what its worth until done just right.

Whereas other equipment is engineered to be easy so that it doesn't take a lot of work to help them perform much better/easier but ultimately don't meet the results as well, in the end (hypothetically).

Point well taken.

a little biased deerhunt1988? im just messing with you but on a serious note im going to have to go with the L7, UNLESS u wanna drop 200-300$ on a TCAB box
They're fugly and expensive. Just spend the extra bones on a cooler looking sub that's louder anyways.

Call me stupid, but back to the TCAB box........what is it? Am running 3 JL12W3v2 D6 and am thinking of putting back in my 06 Type R 15. Would be running a PG Xenon 1200.1 on it (1200 RMS).

Think of "TCAB" as a brand name... it is an enclosure builder who designs high-output boxes and names them TCAB. It's not a style of box.. Just a ported enclosure with huge ports and massive air-space, tuned to the subwoofer and/or your vehicle, based on tuning parameters of your woof. The builder (spkrman ) has hit some very impressive numbers (SPL) with his designs. You can have him build one for you if you want to have your own "tcab" enclosure.

Hope that clears it up.

i just read this entire thread trying to learn what a tcab box is, **** you guys get side tracked easily with the old "L7s have sh!tty SQ" haha

It has been answered for you already.
