Type of cone

I don't know if this is true or just theory. Does the type of cone impact the kind of bass that a subwoofer puts out? Meaning is there a difference between using a paper cone, aluminum cone, etc in whether a particular subwoofer will produce a certain kind of bass?

well im sure materials vary in weight, stiffness and strength... And some materials probably conduct heat more than others... Im sure most subs are built the way they are for a reason

Different cones have different weights, which will affect the overall performance of the woofer.. the heavier the cone the deeper it will play, all else equal...

It's pretty hard to make comparisons beyond that.. not all 15" pressed pulp cones are the same, neither are all 15" spun aluminum cones.. ect..

You will probably find the best strength to weight ratio with composite cones, however..

why does extra weight make it play lower?

the driver will have a lowered resonant frequency due to the heavier moving mass. That's really just one thing to consider though. Since there is no breakup to consider in subbass frequencies for all intenets and purposes you can pretty much build the cone out of whatever you want. You just want something fairly stiff, whether it's lightweight or heavy depends on what tsp's your shooting for and you can always alter them via other means too.
