Tweeter + Sail Questions *Pics*

I have a pair of DLS UR1 tweeters. They are currently mounted like so:

I was wondering of your opinion on this matter.

Should I...

1.) Use "kitty hair" fiberglass reinforced body filler to mold like clay, then body filler, primer, paint

2.) Stretch a T-Shirt over it, resin+harder, body filler, primer, paint

3.) Same as #2, bud add a layer or two of fiberglass

4.) Other - please specify.

This will be done SOON and I will post pics of finished product.

req, a knowledgable guy, votes for 1.

I vote for 2, but it might not be strong enough.

if you wanna spend the money though, 3M Duramix 40\40 will be better than kitty hair. its like liquid ABS plastic - and it chemically adheres to the ABS plastic that the sail panel is made from.

but if you DONT have the money (like $40~60) for that crap, a can of adhesion promotor, some sand paper on the ABS will soften it up and let the bondo adhere better (this is like - a must-do)

but the kitty hair should be PLENTY strong to hold it in place. fiberglass+resin will make it hard because you have to wrap it around the edges, and then the size of the panels will get larger (because the thickness of the cloth) wheras the kittyhair just attaches to the front.

its not a structural feature of the car, it does NOT stand up to people kicking it (hopefully no more KNEES) and its not a heavy or high-pressure speaker. fiberglass is NOT needed and its EXTRA work.

1.) what should i wrap around the back of the baffle (where the tweeter's back end will go)?

2.) bondo? that 23-step explanation didn't say anything about bondo... just spray-on adhesive promoter and kitty hair. Or is bondo a component of kitty hair?

alright. i'll go with that route.

nothing? take the sail things you have now, and just glob the kittyhair around it to the shape you like. partly to hold the mdf rings in place, and partly to make it look pretty. thats it. JUST like play-dough or clay but a little thinner and with weird strands. theres nothing special about this, you will NOT see the hole that the tweet is in, and you wont be seeing the rear-side of the sail.

kittyhair = bondo + fiberglass strands. its just a habit for me to write bondo instead ... 'bondo' is actually a BRAND of 'body filler', and 'kittyhair' is just a nickname for 'fiberglass reinforced body filler'

so just get some kittyhair.

but if you want to PAINT it. getting a small can of SKIMCOAT or LIGHTWEIGHT BODYFILLER for a 'smooth finish' layer is a really good idea. because getting an 'babies-***' smooth surface with kittyhair is not easy.

because it looks good, its easy and cheap...

eaiser to do it the other way... sir. just plop it on, then sand. no stretchin, trimming, glassing, reinforcing, bla bla bla. its not eaiser your way.

but its going to be hard to block sand such a small\curved shape. but its a good thing to have none the less.

and the kittyhair\skimcoat will last a long time i think.

i can just use my fingers for the really curved stuff... i hope. but meh. i'll find a way. ummmmmmm video man, video! Saturday is Junkyard, Sunday is G/F's anniversary (11months) and Monday is glassin' time, weather providing.

yep, i already talked to my GF about that, and she is game, ill scoop her on the way home. then tape it - and ill try and get it hosted tonight. ill PM you the URL.

anywho.

what i did with my door pod, was just put the sandpaper on my finger, and rub around the edge. works fine. you are gonna want to lay some primer between the painting stage tho. so remember that.

scuff+adhesion promotor (get the kittyhair to stick really well)

clean

kittyhair (shape)

sand

skimcoat (smooth+fill pinholes)

sand

primer (smoother)

sand

paint (mmm)

sand

install (YUM)

Thank you. I forgot about primer, and forgot to buy some.

I have another question, though... How should I apply so that it fits perfectly with the A-pillar? Put some tape over the A-pillar, then put the kitty hair on, then close the door?

like, putting the kittyhair on the sail WHEN its installed?

i suppose you could do that if you are afraid of it not working, but i dont see a problem just putting it on- you can always sand it off\down.

just do it in layers. know what i mean?

Yes. Didn't think about doing that. Just do one layer that's basically just enough to reach from the baffle to the sail in every direction, then build outwards as needed. Thx again
