Tube amp (4 channel)

Honestly, I used to be on your side totally on this. But, recently, I have been to auditions where the only thing that was changed out was the amp. Everything else remained and there were very real differences in the amps. The way the music was handled, the sound, even the background sounds were changed. Now most of these were 20,000 and up amps and I'm sure this makes big differences, but there were real world differences.

sounds like a major difference in power.
Or mismatched levels between amplifiers, or frequency response differences (again, add an EQ and get the same affect), etc etc.

Amps aren't mythical unicorns.....everything they do can be described by science and, more importantly, measured. If you heard a difference, you could measure that difference and determine exactly why you heard a difference. More often than not, that difference isn't even due to the amps, but due to the setup of the amps. And the times it actually is the amplifier, you can measure said amplifier and determine exactly what is "different" to cause the sound characteristics you heard....and adjust other amps accordingly //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

PS: I'm not trying to start an argument here......just save you a little money from the thinking that a $1k amp must "sound better" than a $300 because XYZ said so, or because it's class A vs class A/B.

if you want so called stellar performers (if you have a solid processer i doubt you could tell anyway) look into zed audio and audison. again if you are not using the xovers or eq settings on the amp i REALLY doubt you could ab test them. as far as your home amplifier tests go it isnt too terribly difficult to put in an internal eq and call it "sound quality inputs" or something. only rca cables i have "heard" a difference in have boxxes and circuits in them to make the sound "better". in reality its just a form of eq. take a digital eq/xover with time alignment hook it up to a memphis amp (dont use any setting on the amp set to bypass) and hook up a brax amp in the same set up (same power) i doubt you hear much of a difference at all. even if there is you can tune it via the processor lol.

Hrm. I would have to disagree with the comment about two amps sounding the same. I have listened to home audio for a fair amount of time and have recently gotten into higher end home audio eq. Different amps for home audio have totally different sounds. The staging, color, just about everything. I will agree with you that I may be getting too wrapped up in the classes and what type of amp it is. I think I will look into what some top SQ people are using amp wise. I know that the installs they use are going to make a HUGE difference on what they sound like but I would like to get a general idea. I do appreciate your information and knowledge on this topic. I want to get a really nice SQ setup for my next ride. Then again I want it to have really decent accurate low end as well. Of course, I need to find a new car first //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif
Thanks again,

Justin
I totally agree with this statement.

I totally agree with this statement.
lwhat does an amp do? also noone in like 8+ yrs at least has won richard clark's amp challenge. you may not like what he does with it but he doesnt "mod" anything:) and if you are going to spend the money for a sq set up i will bet money the processing plays a bigger role in sq than the difference in amps.
