Trying to gain comparison knowledge on subs...

Whoever reamarked about the X-max is wrong...

The W7 may have a large throw, but that's what allows it to reproduce the lower musical notes better, by displacing more air. Look at DD subs....they have an x-max that most would consider unimpressive, yet they win SPL awards all the time.

Well, if the W7 wasn't amde to be loud then JL made a mistake. These subs are loud as hell. Just lastnight, I checked out my boys system. He has 1 10" W7 powered by a JL500.1 in a ported box and man that thing was F'n loud. Sounded like he had 2-12's back there. JL better get on the ball cuz those things are rediculously loud //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

You need the long excursion to play loud on the deepest of notes. These notes or tones are not the tones used in the spl burp world. They ususally are above 45 hz and even 60 hz. That is why you can have an spl sub without 32mm of xmax ie the L7. That long throw is perfect for the daily driver that wants the SQL setup. To play a 30 hz tone loudly you need long excursion or several woofers with less excursion.

JL also does not want everyday people using their subs in the true SPL setup due to the inexperienced folks that would blow the subs and want thier warranty to cover it. No company wants 16 year olds hooking their 10 inch W3's to a 3000 watt amp to see how loud it gets on their Radio Shack meter.

dont be so noob like........ being loud is a bonus. nobody said they couldnt be loud. but thier intended use was SOUND QUALITY. which is what i said in the first place......

These subs are loud as hell.

to your ear...... they are NOT Loud on a meter. thier are much better woofers for that application. which would be SPL. the opposite of SPL is SOUND QUALITY. see where i'm going with this???

i imagine it would be. a nice setup.

must be a bad pair of 12's.....

thats just the noob in you talking. come on now...... nobody said they couldnt be loud. quit confusing things and try to understand what is being laid out plainly before your eyes.

Most of the SQL drivers you guys are talking about, the W7, XXX and Brahma, are BL optimized drivers. Read up on XBL^2 and JL's method of BL optimizing the dub, you'll find the design was intended purely for SQ purposes, and long excursion capabilities were merely a bonus side effect of the overall design. Ive seen representatives from the manufacturers of all three of these subs say that. Even looking back to the old days of one of the first long excursion drivers, the GZ Nuke, its design intent was SQ. I think if you want to nitpick further than that, you are just being arguementative. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

Keep in mind, those SPL setups run right at, or very close to tuning for their ported enclosures. At tuning in a ported enclosure, cone excursion is at its minimum. In this type of extreme setup (the world of SPL burping), other specs become more important than excursion, such as power handling, cooling capabilities, etc. This does not mean excursion is meaningless in the rest of the world, where we play music through our subs that diverges from the tuning freq.
