Ok, got a 2004 Taurus.

Dropped two 12s in the back, in a sealed MTX box.

Sounds like it is having a hard time hitting, or pushing out so it seams like it is muffled at higher volumes.

Here is where it gets intresting.

drop the back seat, no differance, open windows up front, no differance.

CRACK the trunk, BOOM, this thing is louder than needs be! Just like it should!

, How do I fix this one. I thought it would be a air thing, but since I open the back seat, and it don't change, WTF!

Any help appricated!

Your trunk seals too well, you can cut some holes in your rear deck, its a 2004 but hey its a ford! Oh wait your seat folds down, ummmm... What are you powering the MTXs, size of the box, and model of the MTXs?

its louder because you open the trunk and let all the magical goodness escape. close your windows and all doors, pop the trunk and sit in the drivers seat and see if it sounds any better (dont listen to outside noise)

They are two 12inch Q-Sounds, with 360watt Optimus amp. Dude, I know, i Know, get some real stuff, but hey, these subs have been in 3 cars and the amp has been in 4! They work great togeather with this same box. its a MTX sealed box.. ALl of this stuff is like 4 years old, but dude, when I just crack the trunk, BINGO, huge volume just like it used to be. Just can't figure out what the heck is causing it to be so muffled! Its weird!

yeah redesign ur box. Also go to crossfirecaraudio.com and look at an article they have on this. But it all boils down to ur setup.

cancelation, is the box facing backwards? try moving it all the way back, like a couple inches from the back. try turning it around and facing the cabin. if it sounded good in other cars, then its probably install related, just play with the positioning and see what happens.

Well everyone, simple problem, and a stupid installer but here we go!

Setup:

2004 Taurus SRS

Pioneer Permier MP3 CD Deck

Line Levels Sub/out to AMP crossed at 80

Factory Doors and Rears

Optimus 360 Watt 4-Channel Bridged to Two Channel

MTX Sealed Twin 12 Box -- orginally Purchased from Circuit City

2x 12s by QSound

Issue:

Once installed the sub sound sounds muffled, does not have the volume or low frequency responce. As soon as trunk is cracked the bass sounds like it should be, much louder, and better low frequency responce.

Solution:

TURN THE FREKEN SUB BOX TOWARDS THE BACK OF THE CAR!!!!!

dua!

Windows up... Trunk closed, mulffled.
Pop trunk with button, INSTANT HUGE DIFFERANCE!
take a picture of your box\trunk with your setup exacttally how it is and show us.

i bet you just have a poorly designed box with improper sound deadening and terrible cancelation.

and 2 10's off 300w isnt that much... so dont be surprised when it isnt incredibly loud.

Just try moving the box around as some others have mentioned. Try it all the way at the rear of the car, with the sub facing up or to the front.

If it gets loud ever, then its not just a crappy sub :p that means something is just cancelling it out.

Whats happening is that the sub is making sound waves to the front and back. The wave that goes to the back of the car hits the back of the trunk and reflects, and gets back to the sub just in time to cancel the front wave. If you move the sub to the back of the car, not only will the waves not cancel (cause the reflected wave will be much closer to the original) but they will actually build!

Moral of the story is that if you put that box in the right spot, it may get even louder than when you pop the trunk!
