90% chance it's your box and/or your install. Then again you haven't mentioned what amps you've tried either.

I got my HO alternator from Excessive Amperage. He does good work and I got good service after the sale with him as well. There's a few others that lots of guys use here as well with good results.

Optima is a fair choice of battery that's available about anywhere. I recently bought the Sears Die Hard Platinum which I'm pretty happy with and I sort of like the Sears warranty. Theres a dozen battery brands that people here use with good results too (though I suspect there's only a few companies who actually OEM them).
