Those ones on crutchfield for $99 are last years model. I just bought one (and I like it), but if you spend an extra $30 you can get those ones off of ebay that are this years model. They produce 600 watts rms each whereas the old ones are only 500 watts rms. I think there are a couple of other differences too, but not sure what they are.
What you heard about HAVING to spend $500 for a quality amp is garbage. To reiterate what these guys said, if you buy something brand name, i.e. Alpine, JL, Rockford, then yes, you will be paying more. But you are mainly paying for the name. They really aren't much (if any) better than the other names that were suggested to you. If you want a really great amp, go with the sundown. But I think you would be really happy with the AQ.
And yeah there are better subs out there. I'm not saying type R's are horrible. They get loud, but loud isn't best. Are you open to other suggestions, or are you set on the type R's?
