Too much bass, not enough PUNCH. Read.

Please forgive me if this makes no sense. I really have no clue how to describe this.

Ok my components are as followed.

Sony CDX-F7705X Head unit

Rockford Fosgate P312D4 Subwoofer in a small enclosed box.

Pioneer GM-D510M Amplifier

Right now the bass is not exactly how I would want it. It's long, and drawn out. There isn't much "punch" to it. I want to hear and feel the quick pounding of the drums in songs not just a flat deep base note. A good example is Bush - Chemicals Between Us. When the bass starts it is basically just a huge 2 second drawn out bass note that calms down, then boom another before the other one even ends.

How can I tune this thing to have better quality bass. Right now it's too much bass and it kinda hurts listening to it after awhile if your not used to it.

Well other than having a bias against RF, 1 12" really isn't going to "hit you in the chest" or hit real hard. How accurate/drawn out are the hits? My 9500 hits decently hard, but it obviously "booms" more than it "bangs". How big is your box?

If it's ported then seal it. Sealed=SQ/Punchy, Ported=Loud/Sloppy

In VERY general terms, yes. Which for this discussion is good enough, lay off guys..

sealed is geared towards SQ, you get a flat in car response and extends into midbass much better, allowing it to be "punchy"

ported is geared towards being loud, as there is no other reason to run ported in a car, you will NOT have a flat response 99% of the time. With poorer transient response, ported is indead "sloppy"-er, or atleast it can be, it can also sound quite nice.

Again a gross and inaccurate generalization. It matters more that the sub and enclosure are matched to each other than it does whether the enclosure is ported or sealed. There are subs that you can't get a flat response in one enclosure type or the other. Just because most car enclosures are not tuned to provide a flat response doesn't mean that you can't get a flat response out of a ported box. My single 12 is tuned for a flat response. It's in a ported box. It plays extremely accurately and has the potential to really pound, though I don't run enough power to it to make use of that potential. At the same time, putting a sub in a sealed box isn't going to guarantee a flat response or good transients. Just like you can mismatch a ported box to what a sub needs, so can you a sealed box.

Exactly, hence in VERY general terms. Try to tell me any more than 1% of ported boxes out there in the car audio world play flat IN CAR. You'd be much better off sealed in most every case if you are going for that. Exceptions are out there, sure, but for the purpose of this generally noob discussion, I still say I'm right //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/tongue.gif.6130eb82179565f6db8d26d6001dcd24.gif

I am going throught a similar thing. However I am having trouble with a bandpass design. It is adjustable (deathbox 2) It is too **** loud of my stock frontstage, and the bass doesn't punch like my single 12 sealed. I know bandpass are not gonna be as punchy, but aren't they suposed to be accurate? Now I am going on.........

I heard the old Rf punch 10 in a small seal box and it had tons of punch lack low notes though first thing is to check your settings exspecially your lpf crossover that might be the problem.
