Tons of JL sytem questions

OK, I just put together a new system in my 97 Grand Am with the following:

JL 300/4

JL 250/1

10W6(sealed, wired 3Ohm)

JL VR690CXi

JL XR650CSi

Alpine CDA-9827

I thought the 250/1 would be enough because I'm not looking to rock a city block

(well if I could afford it I would) but I don't understand why I have to turn the gains on the 300/4 way down to get the system to balance. Don't get me wrong, it hits hard and sounds great but if I set the gains to 17.3 VAC on the 300/4 I have to crank the bass up and my sub won't last too long. I know if I ported the box it would be louder but would it sound good with rock and would building a new box be worth the volume I would gain? I also heard that Alpine has gone to crap so would a new deck help? and does anyone know the best placement for a box in a Grand Am trunk? I don't know, but maybe I expected to much from the 250/1 but I thought a 250/1 and a 10W6 would be a good match.

PS. what's a good xover setting for this setup? and I just put a new foam surround on my sub, will it get louder when it breaks in?

Sorry for all the questions

Thanks in advance

trunk enclosures should, unless the output of the sub is sealed FROM the trunk, face to the rear of the car..this will prevent cancellation caused by delayed sound waves... the downfall?... Your trunk will rattle unless you dampen it mightily. (rattle = loss of output)

meh.....The sales guys always sell the 500/1 with a w6. 250/1 for a w3,

1000/1 for the dub7. Once the high school kids hear the sub on the right amp they will pay the extra money. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif Suckers.

wow, you think if you talk directly to the manufacturer, they would give you the right info.

I ask JL what would be the best amp and they said "it depends on how hard you play it, but either one would work"

really sad when people on a message board know more about the products than the manufacturer.

500/1 on the way //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crying.gif.ec0ebefe590df0251476573bc49e46d8.gif Mine is for sale on here you could have bought it cheap ! w6 on a 500/1 = nice.

Which W6? The original or the V2. A 500/1 is WAY more than the original wants or needs, the 250/1 is the perfect match for it. For the V2 it should be about right. I'm gonna bet that you have the original based on the 3 ohm wiring.

A single 10W6 (original) isn't a lot of output for a car with a trunk unless you make quite sure that the output is adequately vented into the interior of the car. Best way to ensure that is a perfed rear deck. JL made these to be used in 3's for a reason.
