Thoughts of TC 5200's

C'mon, Dan. Don't get all worked up over the past. No one is asking you to buy any TC products. You saved me from stating the obvious, which is the fact that nearly every driver Thilo designed is, in fact, a SQ driver. Some of them just happen to have the ability to get very loud. Does this mean they should be used for SPL purposes and tested for their ability to handle burp abuse? I personally don't think so, but others will try and have tried, some with high degrees of success and others with eminent failure. It's a fact that every single driver can be broken with the right amount of abuse, whether it's the coil burning up, spiders letting go, or any number of other failures waiting to happen. TC drivers are the kind of drivers that can tear themselves apart, due in part to the very strong motors employed, and it's up to the user to learn the limits of them and respect those limits. Thilo used a very rubbery epoxy that remained very flexible to alleviate some of the stress encountered at Xmech, the downside is that it doesn't have the same holding power that CA does. I would rather have that flexibility since I know when to stop applying power to my drivers and don't really do the SPL thing. SPL guys should probably look elsewhere unless they are very careful and can accept the limitations of these designs. Those that can accept them are rewarded with some of the finest low frequency reproduction possible. I know because I own close to thirty TC drivers and not a single one has failed me. I'm not saying the company didn't have QC problems, but what company hasn't?

I'm not worked up over anything, but the people in this thread were trying to hold them up to some god like standard or something, which we all know they weren't. If you're going to talk honestly about the drivers, present the good as well as the bad. At the time I had those drivers, Thilo WAS trying to market them as a end all be all super SPL/SQ sub,....and we all know now that's just not the case.

The whole point of true SPL based setups is to push the driver to the limits to get the highest score possible. And I did that, I've got one of these subs to pull a 155.6 with an enclosure that was below the back seats and firing to the rear hatch door. It did it about 3-4 times before it self destructed. Now imagine if that sub had been built just a little bit better?

True, you need the good with the bad. There's no doubt that, in his heart, Thilo had high hopes for them being the last word for SPL/SQ but in his practices he just didn't have the perfect recipe. I have no doubt that you and others helped evolve some of his products from the way you were killing them and also from the ways that you were succeeding with them. Those were some impressive things to see. But you said it best, the whole point is to push it to the limits and Thilo's can be exceeded a bit easier than some other well-knowns. In addition, we all know the real motivation behind any kind of marketing, true or false.

I forgot to say, very impressive. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif That's a testament in itself for the abilities of these drivers.

maybe because the ones we had didn't have glue problems, put up good numbers, and took power well...
Dan never owned or tested a stock TC-5200 or LMS-5400 either, he got top assemblies with test-parts for an old 4HP motor he had. The glues used on his driers were top grade, and did not fail, it was by in large cone isuse. The true +CP cones are not metal either, they are Rohacll with fiberglass on both sides, very different style cone.

I never said I owned nor tested an LMS-5400 ever, don't start putting words in my mouth kid. As far as 5200's...how many of those did you douchebags get back with glue seperations? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif And the test assemblies DID fail at the glue joint, weather the cone was made out of alumnium or paper is irrelevant - it seperated AT the glue joint. Kyle, you can't just go around making up history just to serve your needs - you're no Ben Milne.

well say i keep them. is there anybody that can make recommendations on what i should do with them if i wanted to build a box for my x runner
if u have 15's 6.5 cubes tuned to 35hz with 140 square inches of port and ur good to go

i still have my custom 3hp 12's and they sound like ***...but i know i need more power to them...
