I actually prefer optical over HDMI or Digital Coax most of the time. Almost a tie between Coax and Optical

as a cable installer, i have never used the optical out except once on a ps3 to a AV unit.

just no reason to do it...

you can find optical that cheap on ebay all the time

also BB and CC employee discounts are about the same price for hdmi cables

my cousin got me a hdmi for...i think 6 bucks
