thinking of getting a hybrid...

went last night and bought a brand new loaded up Civic EX-L for my wife, we traded in our van for it...the car is very very nice...doesn't quite get hybrid fuel economy, but it's much better than the van and I feel comfortable with it, has a lot of safety features...As for myself, I am going to keep looking for a little while longer, but I will probably end up with the new Accord sedan, i drove 2 of them last night, they are very sexy and get good MPG...just not sure if I want to get rid of my truck and trade in my Mazda or vice versa...going to keep thinking it over...

well that Malibu is a lot different than a Civic Hybrid or something along those lines...i've noticed that the majority of the american hybrids aren't much better in the MPG category than their gasoline counterparts and aren't near as far spaced out as the foreign vehicles...

Hybrids are still a retarded purchase from a cost perspective compared to an efficient diesel or gasoline engine. Even with the tax breaks and fuel savings, it will still take several years to make up the purchase difference, not including the cost of maintenance and repairs on the more sophisticated drivetrain.

Well said.

Hybrids are enviro-marketing hype at its finest...

Just the recycling of the battery banks makes the environmental footprint bigger than a standard gas car.

OTOH, wouldn't all those batteries make for easy installs of BIG amps???

im not sold on hybrids being all hype...i agree that it is probably too soon to just jump into one as they just arent far enough along in the evolution process, which is why i shopped around...and for my needs i think i found what we wanted...

go sit in a honda fit....outstanding mechanically and they are surprisingly spacious from what they look on the outside...
My sister has one, and we drove from charleston sc to cincinatti OH on one tank of gas ~10 gal

edit: if you are going to drive one, get the sport...
I test drove the Fit 3 times before I decided I didn't like the choppy/porpoising ride quality on the highways. I drive to Michigan to visit family 1-2 times a year and I wouldn't be able to tolerate it beating my brain around. Also drove the Scion xD a few times and was set to buy one, but the "no haggle" pricing killed it for me. I would have ended up paying over $18k for one nicely equipped but still had less options and space than the Versa I got for $17k out the door.

The few things I don't like about the Versa are the tightly grouped cup holders, the rear seats don't fold flush with the hatch floor, and the seats don't quite have enough support in the small of my back.

Just a note on the seat support subject - I was in a car accident 10 years ago that messed up the alignment of my spinal cord, so almost all cars don't feel supportive enough to me.

the fit has a very stiff suspension, but i did not notice any porpous on the highway...you will however feel every elevation change in this vehicle

...it is like being on a roller skate, very responsive, surprisingly peppy for 1.5L (109hp), but i have never driven the automatic, or the base model...only the sport

It wasn't harsh per se, just really choppy. I had a blurred view of my knuckles on the top of the steering wheel in my line of sight because of this.

I loved the layout of the cockpit and the surprising room in it for such a small car, but the ride quality killed it for us. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif
