Thinking of Buying a Shotgun, few Q's?

Okie, I tried doing a search, this is basically all I came up with. BTW, I live in Tennessee FTW.
State Requirements

Rifles and Shotguns

* Permit to purchase rifles and shotguns? No.

* Registration of rifles and shotguns? No.

* Licensing of owners of rifles and shotguns? No.

* Permit to carry rifles and shotguns? No.

Now the thing is I'm 19 years old. I basically want something for provided safety that I can legally own. I actually just want to store this in my truck. Is there any rule/regulations on placement of the firearm? I'd probably lock it in the back since I have a bed cover.

I'm also sure it'll need to be locked up, unloaded, etc, but my main concern is if I am to be stopped and if for some reason I was to be searched this weapon is found locked in a case in my bed would I be in anyway breaking the law?

Now if all this goes well then please throw out there some decent shotguns. Also wondering if the applies for assault rifles? I'd love something .223 if I could legally carry one[/b].
as far as "assault rifle" goes, you can own one legaly, going through the right channals (rectal exam by the A.T.F) but most .223s are not assault rifles because by definition an "assault rifle" is fully automatic, a ruger ranch rifle (mini 14) is SEMI-AUTO therfore not an assault rifle and its a great rifle

Anyway, I was planning on something in the lines of defense. I just wanted to be sure I'd be fine riding around with one of these unloaded in my truck. Now my question to Buck since you live in TN, this holds the same for assault rifles as well? I'd love a handgun but have a couple more years. I'll probably even be getting into the range if I get me a firearm. I'm in Murfreesboro BTW!
that cool. i'm in murfreesboro alot as well. but i believe most of what i said applies for any firearm, except for pistols.

if you like to shoot, come to nashville and shoot at the gun club. its about 5 mins away from white bridge road. have you ever been there?

they are very reliable. but idk if they are for house defense. i would recomend going with a pistol like sawwed of 12 gauge.
You don't know if a shotgun is for home defense, yet you recommend a pistol //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/confused.gif.e820e0216602db4765798ac39d28caa9.gif

thats where they start getting illegal. dont buy a new gun and "saw off" the barrel, buy a short barrel gun. at least 18" is legal

a pistol grip (im sure thats what he ment) 12 gauge is the best personal defence weapon there is. just not practical for carry but great for having next to the bed

stfu. a long barreled shotgun is bulky in close quarters. I have been shooting since i was 3. its not a pistol, dumbass, its a short shotgun with pistol grips which makes it very easy to handle. i know sawwed off shotguns somewhat illegal (i'm not really sure to what degree though), but some companies make these specifically for home defense.

i shoot a lil bit too

if you get a shotgun get a remington 870.. they are cheap and will last FOREVER
^x2 thats what I got, very nice gun. The only thing I can possible wish different is the location of the safety, mossberg got that part perfect I think. I'd suggest looking around this forum --> Shotgun World for a bit. Lotsa good info there to look through.

In some cases this is true. Best case scenario is you have both. In close quarters where you will have a hard time maneuvering the shotgun between you and the criminal, a handgun will work out better. (Hallways and such) Less for them to grab on to and wrestle the gun away from you. I kinda wish now that I had gotten a 20guage instead of a 12. Just as intimidating of a sound, but not so bad on over-penetration of the ammo. I have kids in the house and the last thing I need is shot going through walls... //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif
